As a special treat today for Realtime fans and followers, we have Sammy Kaye’s Sunday Serenade. This is just a listen into the typical Sunday afternoon here in New York City as everyone enjoys their day of rest. [“Swing and Sway with Sammy Kaye” my foot. He may sway, but he sure don’t swing. – Homer]

99.9 percent of the credit goes to Homer, but it is my pleasure to add my little bit.

You two have really outdone yourselves with this. Just wonderful. With bundling the middle three off to CCD and hitting up the library and all, I’ll be putting all of the audio on my ipod for friday night. This is just SO cool! I rarely manage to make any comments in this wonderful series, but guys, seriously, THANKS!

The aviation beacon at the top of Mount Diablo, in the San Francisco Bay Area, was turned off on December 7, 1941, after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The beacon remained off until December 7, 1964, when at the suggestion of Admiral Chester Nimitz it was relit again as an annual memorial event.

The beacon is lit every December 7 from dusk to dawn.

Interesting speculation in these broadcasts that Japan had attacked to “delay” the US Pacific Fleet from interceding in the far east and further assumption that the Navy would now engage in a “blockade” of the Japanese mainland. This just gives one a glimpse of the incompleteness of information flowing from Pearl to D.C. then to the press late in the day on Dec 7. Tomorrow begins to reveal the level of devastation at Pearl and
it’s long term impact on US forces to counter
the Japanese threat.

A very special thank-you. This is one of three days that mark a watershed in your project, and we are all very grateful for your efforts.

It is a fascinating thing to see what information was transmitted in view of what information was available. Journalism in general has come a very long way since 7 December, 1941, and it has all been downhill.

Believe it or not I was 10 years old and our Silvertone radio was set atop the Coldspot fridge and was tuned to
“Songs of The Islands” the very program the japs were tuned to when that happened.

Neat. thanks for sharing.

Worth hearing twice. Judy Garland singing to the troops at Fort Ord on December 7, 41. I believe that qualifies as poignant.
