Michael Gaynor, 25, completed his bachelors degree and certification to teach elementary and high-school physical education in May 2009, then set out during a recession to find that dream job.
Over the next two years, the quest would take him from substitute teaching and respite care work in Iowa, back to his parents home in Skokie; to Florida, where he waited tables, then back to Skokie; to Colorado as a substitute teacher, coach and camp counselor, then, back to Skokie.
My moves back home were always transitional. They allowed me to save up money, not having to pay rent and utilities, says Gaynor, who got a new job and moved out from his parents again last week.
A U.S. Census Bureau analysis earlier this month found that nearly one of every five young men in their mid-20s through mid-30s are either moving back home with their parents or never left.
The report, Americas Families and Living Arrangements: 2011, found 19 percent of American men age 25 to 34 living in their parents homes the highest level since 1960.
Only 10 percent of women in that age group were living at home with parents.

A degree in education...that’s were all of the really smart kids go. (</ sarc >)
>>Ive read 23 or 24 is the new 18, because of the way weve been raised. My generation isnt willing to settle, which is probably why a lot of us are still unemployed, he says, laughing.<<
That is the problem in a nutshell. Way to go parents — you taught your kids that self-esteem is more important than self-respect. The chickens are literally coming home to roost.
>>Yeah, big market for elementary school gym teachers<<
There’s an opening at Penn State... ;)
A generated crisis called a recession.
There are always exceptions that prove the rule...but “studies show” that the schools of education contain, on average, the underachievers of the future.
What kind of selfish creep doesn't pay rent when they move back in with their parents?
Living proof here.......I have two sons that moved back home..... Both lost decent jobs and now work crap jobs and can’t make on their own anymore
The reccession is hitting hardest is because we can’t receive benefits. We end up homeless..
Don’t you believe in the free market, where a fair deal is considered what a buyer and seller agree to?
If he doesn’t want to pay rent and the parents don’t want the rent money, it’s fair. :)
Even if they do take a job that is “beneath them,” it still likely won’t pay enough for them to be on their own.
During the recession...jobs are scarce, salaries are falling, and yet cost of living is rising.
It seems to me they could probably make it, if they moved in together. Two crap jobs, full time, can add up to a reasonably substantial amount.
Vote for the Dems? Suffer from the Dems! Too bad the majority of young people fell for all that OBoZo change mantra bamboozlings.
What’s the old saying? Something like, “Home is where you go because no one else will take you?’ (or something like that?) Either way, good for you for helping your sons out when they need you. Personally, I’d rather my kids stay with me rather than some rat infested, crime ridden apartment just to be on their own.
>>Even if they do take a job that is beneath them, it still likely wont pay enough for them to be on their own.<<
How will they know if they don’t take it? If nothing else they can help daddy and mommy with the bills. Not everyone gets their dream job, sometimes even after a lifetime.
A man works an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay. A child says “well it isn’t enough so I won’t do anything.”
>>During the recession...jobs are scarce, salaries are falling, and yet cost of living is rising<<
12% unemployment = 88% employment. I think “scarce” means “not what I wanted.” I hadn’t heard we were in an inflationary cycle.
It looks like the age of Manhood went from 17 when I was a kid to about 35 today.
Okay, everyone go ahead and jump on me and tell me how your family is nothing like that, nor anyone you've ever known, ever.
>>Id rather my kids stay with me rather than some rat infested, crime ridden apartment just to be on their own.<<
You would do them no kindness. It is through adversity we grow. A soft landing makes for flabby reflexes.
If my son came to me at the age of 25 and told me he wanted to live in the basement I’d kick his ass and wish him luck finding a homeless shelter.
