Good morning gardeners. Remembering Veterans Day. Here is a big Thank You to all who have served our Country. Just wondering how many of you gardeners are Veterans?
It is a Chilly 29 F here in East Central Mississippi. I have been trying to keep up with the leaves falling off the trees and I am hating the pine needles more and more everyday. I dont use them in my compost pile because they take to long to break down. I pile them by the roadside and the county comes by once a week and vacuums them up.
I hope all your Fall gardens are prospering.
If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.
Weekly Gardening Thread
"I think there is one higher office than president and I would call that patriot."
I hope all of you will stop by.
This is typically a low volume ping list. Once a week for the thread and every once in a while for other FR threads posted that might be of interest.
If you would like to be added to or removed from the list please let me know by FreepMail or by posting to me.
‘Mornin, All. We had snow yesterday (always a shock) but it is al gone today. Just a reminder that there are many garden tasks still undone. Woe is me.
Anyone with experience with
Catalpa trees
lead trees (mimosa)
black locust
or seaberry (buckthorn)
please relate. Thanks.
Are you planning to raise Catalpa worms?
Great idea for getting your mulch for free!
I’ve heard that’s a bi-product...
100% likely?
I bet they’d make good food for fish & fowl.
My granddaughter will be presenting a picture of my Dad in uniform displaying debris from the last German U boat sunk in World War II off the coast of New England. His ship was the Moberly, and participated in the action.
It is a cold day here of 28 degrees. Yep we finally got that freeze. Harvested the corn and persimmons and green tomatoes a couple of days ago. Still have some tomatoes under a double row cover. We'll see later how that worked.
Spinach, tomatoes, citrus, and herbs are all doing fine indoors. Winter garden of lettuce etc. is doing fine under row covers for now.
Have a great weekend. God Bless.
Just heard it is 27 at ABIA, but is 36 at the house. Lots of frost on the roofs and grass here. I don't think it will do much damage to the gardens. My neighbor had several tomato plants that got nipped when we had the light freeze last week. They were loaded with fruit.
Oh Yes. They are great for fishing. I have read that you can harvest them and put in a jar with some corn meal and freeze them and when they are thawed out they are still alive.
Same as snakes. Freeze a snake, thaw it out, and wiggles. So I’ve been told. Had a friend, science teacher, who kept a frozen snake in the freezer then would take it to school. YUK!
Today, Thanks to all military personnel, active duty, retired, citizen soldiers and of course, our friends who have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms.
The cold temps this week killed my peppers so picked the few left and will call it finished until next spring.
Prayers and a hat tip to ALL Veterans of all ages. My two brothers, a sister and two BiLs served in WWII. They all came home, went to work and raised families.
I am having photo storage problems that is giving me fits. Fotki keeps messing with my password for my paid account and Flikr crashes my browser when I try to upload photos. Any tips?
PhotoBucket
I use PhotoBucket too.
Satan69 posted a photo link on last weeks thread of their Florida garden that was planted on Sept 15th. I just can’t fathom the climate difference between there and here in Eureka Ca...http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/chat/2802441/posts?page=63#63
I’ll give it a try but I have a couple of hundred photos on Fotki I can’t access. They give me a key to create a new password and then that one fails. It’s like their servers are crashing and it has happened 4 times this year.
We are having lovely weather here in Benderville and I am making progress on planting my winter cover crop but the sun feels so good on my old bones that I spend more time sitting then working. We are still getting a few Raspberries and I picked 6 more cucumbers Tuesday. I cut up two pumpkins and saved the seeds which Lady Bender boiled in a heavy salt brine and then roasted in the oven. First batch was slightly burned but the ones yesterday were perfect and I ate them all in in sitting...
