LOS ANGELES Traffic in the Los Angeles area was flowing freely Saturday morning following the shutdown of a 10-mile stretch of one of the busiest U.S. freeways.
But officials warned the real test was likely to begin around midday, after the country's second-largest city fully awakened.

We have a bar near my house down here in Orange County that’s offering Carmageddon specials all weekend to encourage locals to go there and drink rather than heading up to L.A.
Yeah, I know it’s just their excuse to try to sell more booze and appetizers, but I thought it was kinda funny and it’ll probably bring them in a few extra bucks.
I really hope this keeps the Valley people and East LA folks away from Santa Monica. Would be nice to have a peaceful beach weekend.
Media is concerned that Californians cannot handle pre-planned highway closings - the same people who have to cope with unpredictable earthquakes???
Part of the 10 Freeway was closed for 3 months after the 94 earthquake and we managed to survive. Lots of hype on this.
Predicting Carmageddon is what will prevent Carmageddon. There was supposed to be a Carmageddon when the olympics came to LA in 84, but for those two weeks the LA traffic turned out to be much LESS congested than usual, people stayed home out of fear of massive traffic jams.
If I understand this correctly; only one side of the highway is being repaired. Same thing to happen on the other side in November.
Why not do all of it at once - since the entire highway (both directions) is/are closed????
I would assume that they are going to use concrete structures that are formed and set off site and then trucked in.
Up here in the Sacramento area on the 5 there have been signs for weeks warning of massive delays on LA freeways this weekend.
This closure was all that the media had been talking about for 2 months. So the only people that didn’t know about this were the dead, and they dont drive.
This is a great example of how the media and the political elite just assume that the plebes are idiots.
It is a great day to go for a drive here in LA.

Monday morning rush hour will soon show what will happen.
Um, you don’t own the beach, Santa Monica. Every resident in California does. Look it up.
Signed,
The Valley
101 North to Ventura is smooth. Lovely day for the beach.
If Armageddon turns out to be anything like Carmageddon, people are going to be VERY disappointed.
LOL!!!
Man do I remember dreading the weekends when I lived on the beach.
Fortunately we had no public parking in the area. Unfortunately, we’d get all the valley and east LA types blocking our driveways.
Just taking down an overpass, no concrete that needs to set (I think). From an earlier post of mine:
Just got back from a little SoCal driving. Went from Long Beach to Carson on the 710/405 light traffic. Then took the 110 to downtown LA again light traffic. In fact, made better time than normal for a Saturday morning. Let every weekend be a Carmaggedon!
Remember when everyone was all wee weed about traffic during the Olympics? Traffic around town had never been better. You could get from Santa Monica to the West Valley in minutes.
I do remember. It was beautiful. I worked an earlier shift and the bus just flew in ... to Westwood of all places.
