AG Holder discussed "Project Gun Runner" in April 2009 in Mexico. BUSTED!

Attorney General Eric Holder at the Mexico/United States Arms Trafficking Conference CUERNAVACA, MEXICO ~ Thursday, April 2, 2009

Remarks as prepared for delivery.

First, let me express my thanks to Attorney General Medina Mora and Secretary of Government Gomez Mont for making this conference possible.

This is my first trip to another country as Attorney General. I wanted to come to Mexico to deliver a single message: We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you in this fight against the narcotics cartels. The United States shares responsibility for this problem and we will take responsibility by joining our Mexican counterparts in every step of this fight.

And, together, we will win – thanks in large part to the courage of my Mexican colleagues here today, who are on the front lines every day, and with whom I am proud to collaborate.

The topic that has been addressed over the past two days could not be more important – the development of an arms trafficking prosecution and enforcement strategy on both sides of the border.

I would like to thank the Mexican and U.S. experts who have worked so hard on this issue. On our side, Secretary Napolitano and I are committed to putting the resources in place to increase our attack on arms trafficking into Mexico.

Last week, our administration launched a major new effort to break the backs of the cartels. My department is committing 100 new ATF personnel to the Southwest border in the next 100 days to supplement our ongoing Project Gunrunner, DEA is adding 16 new positions on the border, as well as mobile enforcement teams, and the FBI is creating a new intelligence group focusing on kidnapping and extortion. DHS is making similar commitments, as Secretary Napolitano will detail.

But as today’s conference has emphasized, the problem of arms trafficking will not be stopped at the border alone. Rather, as our experts emphasized, this is a problem that must be met as part of a comprehensive attack against the cartels – an attack in depth, on both sides of the border, that focuses on the leadership and assets of the cartel. This is the type of full-bore, prosecution-driven approach that the U.S. Department of Justice took to dismantle La Cosa Nostra – once the most powerful organized crime group operating in the United States. With partners like those we have here today, I am confident that together, we will defeat these narcotics cartels in exactly the same way. I am proud to stand with you, and to join you in this fight. Thank you again for inviting me here.

“Operation Gunrunner” was started under Bush.
“Operation Fast and Furious” was its extension/modification under the Obama.

“Gunrunner” was a reasonable operation because the straw purchases were followed up with an imperative to seize the guns back after the illegal transfer had occurred - nothing crossed the border, nothing got lost, nobody went home until everything was wrapped up.

“Fast and Furious” eliminated the prior imperative - like notes in bottles tossed into the sea, they wanted to observe where the illegally-transferred arms drifted to and popped up again. Seemed nobody in charge (under THIS administration) considered that the weapons would be used for actual crimes.

What the lead article describes is Holder et al taking over the prior administration’s “Gunrunner” project; it does not describe the paradigm shift from sting to sanctioned smuggling.

Unfortunately you are correct. Project “Gun Runner” is not “Gun Walker”.

BUT, Holder MUST have known. This came directly for BHO2.

If you search Project Gunrunner on the DOJ Website 109 articles are returned. I can’t believe ISSA does not already have prinouts of everyone of them

It’s not helpful.

We’re at the stage of this scandal where everyone fancies themselves experts on what they understand little about. The critical distinction between “Gunrunner” and “Fast and Furious” is lost on most observers now.

That Holder knew of & facilitated “Gunrunner” is no big deal, and that he discussed it with Mexican officials amounts to part of his job.
Idiots conflating the two operations fail to consider Holder would never stand up in front of a group of Mexican officials and announce outright arms smuggling started under his direction; they just see the operation’s name acknowledged and think they’ve discovered the smoking gun.

Gunnrunner started under Bush. It isn’t the problem. Operation Fast and Furious is a PIECE of that larger program...and THAT was started under Obama...and is the piece that gave weapo0ns to the cartels.

“Gun Walker” was the colloquial/satirical term applied by those investigating the criminal operation, until it was discovered it had an official code name of “Fast and Furious”.

With all the overlapping names floating around, coupled with the half-baked hysteria, a lot of people are confused and we’re going to go thru an annoying spell where a lot of people on our side will say a lot of stupid things.

I’ve saved the DOJ website page. I’ve also sent an email to Bret Baier of FOX News Special Report since they’ve been discussing this. The more we can get this in the media, the less chance there is for this to fall down a hole.

The term “Gun Walker” was applied by the Non-ATF, I understand that.

And Yes, “Fast & Furious” is the ATF name. The problem was what it did. The real intent had to come from the top. Not the Top of the ATF or Justice, but the White Hut. No illusions, it must all be exposed.

The only way to kill this beast is sunlight. Top to bottom.

I was half listening to Issa on Hannity last night. I think he said that based on their investigation it appears Holder has committed perjury.

That is a serious offense, especially for head of DOJ.

Thank you for a much needed mature assessment.

Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is sitting in jail because of perjury, isn't that the same reason Martha Stewart went to jail?

How this is handled and investigated will be telling as to what extent our system is corrupted.

1) Project Gunrunner was the Bush era operation which was designed to catch straw purchasers in the US and resulted in about 1200 arrests.
2) Operation Fast and Furious was the Obama era plan out of Phoenix to allow straw purchasers to transport weapons across the border into Mexico to see where they ended up. (supposedly)
3) Operation Castaway was the same as F&F only out of Tampa and Honduras was the (first) destination of the weapons
4) Gunwalker was a term coined by some media hack and has no true basis as the name of a gov’t. operation.

Ya can’t know the players if ya don’t have a scorecard.
