Weekly Gardening Thread – 2011 (Vol. 26) July 08

Good morning gardeners. I have been planting 2 zucchini plants every year I have had a garden and this year is the first year they have produced more than my wife and I can use. I think their production is due to the four-foot spacing between plants I gave them. I may be able to participate in the annual “leave a zucchini on your neighbor’s porch day” this year. It is on August 8th.

I should be getting some ripe tomatoes soon; a few are developing a slight blush. Some netting will have to put up to protect them from the birds; I can’t afford to lose any this year. The jalapeno, pimento and bell pepper plants are doing great. There are some nice large pimentos and I am just waiting for them to turn red.

I hope all your gardens are flourishing.

Good looking spuds. I haven’t tried to grow potatoes yet, but I want to try next year. Potatoes, Tomatoes, and Corn are my favorite veggies.

I also love potato skins, but I won’t eat them unless we have grown them, so I know whether or not pesticide has been used.

It’s “wait and grow” time for my garden, everything got planted late, so nothing is blooming yet. Something dug up and ate my asian melon seedlings. That was the third time I’ve replanted them. Since it’s so late in the season now, I just planted beets in their place. Next year I’ll know to give them extra protection.

Dad nibbled a couple of radishes, they weren’t quite filled out yet, but he says they’re nice and spicy. I’m not fond of radishes myself, so I replanted the empty spots with beets.

Thanks for the info on the seeds.

When I was working managing a High land seismic oil and gas exploration crew I dreamed of this kind of weather! We prayed for what is called a Bermuda High to settle over the Atlantic so there would be little or no rain in our area. Wet fields meant no access and the more damage we could cause to the land and the access roads which we had to repair or pay damages for. It dried up marshy/swampy areas also.

I don’t like all this dry weather now.

Those are some good guys! I love to see them around. Mosquito Hawks they truly are! I was amused by about three or four of them a year or so ago. They were some how attracted to my out side air conditioner condenser unit. Sound? They were just fascinated by it when it turned on flitting about and attacking it and chasing each other away. When it cycled off they went away. Cycle on they were back!

I love casseroles, can you include me too when you post the recipe?

Pinch off a branch, or just the tips of several branches. The stress triggers them to produce.

That’s just fascinating — sort of like a basic watering wand, but much more effective. Thanks. I might try this next year.

When a dish calls for butter I always try my best to use clarified real butter for the taste and its heat tolerance.

No margarine in this house.

Will look up the # 11 recipe.

For casseroles I prefer a round dish - no corners to scrub out when it comes to clean up.

Beautiful. You couldn’t have done that if you’d planned it!

That casserole sounds wonderful, and I already have all the ingredients. (except the zucchini) Maybe there will be one big enough tonight. Certainly in a few days. I have half a BBQ chicken left over in the fridge. If I add that, it will be a one pot meal.

Do you drill any holes in the sides for over-flow in case of too much rain?

If there is not one Zuke big enough tonight, there will be one tomorrow morning!

Wonderful pictures. I am so behind here due to late planting, but I still have a few things in the freezer from last year to tide me over till things start hopping.

That looks like my sprinkler. I water my whole veggie garden with one of those set up in the middle and allowed to run for 100 minutes.

Justa, your garden is beautiful. And I never water my lawn. I’d pay no mind to your neighbors.

Of course, we get more rain than you do. All my water comes from a well, and I don’t want to use too much. A subdivision has gone in next door to me — 18 homes where there were none before. I don’t know if they are tapping the same aquifer I am, but I don’t want to take any chances on running dry.

I’ve talked my husband into taking me to a garden tour in Cedarberg tomorrow. Should be nice.

Did you get any rain yesterday? We picked our first cucumbers this week, and I made a quick batch of refrigerator pickles and onions.

Glad to hear your garden suffered no ill effects.
