Weekly Gardening Thread – 2011 (Vol. 26) July 08

Good morning gardeners. I have been planting 2 zucchini plants every year I have had a garden and this year is the first year they have produced more than my wife and I can use. I think their production is due to the four-foot spacing between plants I gave them. I may be able to participate in the annual “leave a zucchini on your neighbor’s porch day” this year. It is on August 8th.

I should be getting some ripe tomatoes soon; a few are developing a slight blush. Some netting will have to put up to protect them from the birds; I can’t afford to lose any this year. The jalapeno, pimento and bell pepper plants are doing great. There are some nice large pimentos and I am just waiting for them to turn red.

I hope all your gardens are flourishing.

We got rain off and on all day yesterday here in the Colorado Rockies. The garden looks good today.

No, I didn’t see that wave. Guess I’ll have to check around the net. I hope it brings us some rain.

When the sqash and tomatoes and other summer veggies start really coming on I make big batches of what I just calling veggie mush. I just cut up all the veggies (maters, zukes, yellow squash, eggplant, peppers, onions, etc - what ever is on hand) sprinkle liberally with olive oil, (add lots of garlic) and italian herbs (fresh is best) then I wrap it in double foil and toss it on the grill. It is great hot, cold, or room temp. It’s a wonderful meatless meal in and of itself and it always seems to taste better the next day!

Without getting too specific, what beach are you visiting, Mom?

awwww jeeeez...I didn’t take any but there’s a website that I got the idea from. The clay is permeable as long as it isnt painted and the tomatoes can draw the water thru the clay flower pot walls to their root systems. http://www.globalbuckets.org/p/olla-irrigation-clay-pot-system.html

they used gorilla glue and then silicone caulk to seal the joints. I just used some geocell elastomeric caulk from Fleet Farm. 1 step process instead of the 2 that they have. Plus I already had the tube open and in the caulk gun...lol

It is pouring here in Central Kentucky right now. I just watered for the second time this year two days ago. Oh well, this will really give everything a real shot in the arm. Zukes are coming in nicely as are the yellow crooknecks. Watermelons are filling out some and the pole beans are going to make me haul a ladder out to pick them.

Can someone from the real South tell me when I can find ripe figs for sale at a farmer’s market? I don’t want to drive too long, but am willing to head to Northern Alabama or Mississippi or maybe Southern Tennessee.

I may have found it - European or creeping bellflower, Campanula rapunculoides. It's from Europe and invasive.

There's a lot of weather cranking up, there should be some relief for us soon.

That’s it.

Not a very prolific invasive species though. Maybe its due to the fact that its in the shade but its been there for more than the decade I’ve lived here and hasn’t spread. I even dug up some tiger lilies that were choking it out.

If it were purple loosestrife I would go on a murderous rampage. That crap grows everywhere here.

The rain has finally chilled out to normal, things have dried and and have gotten quite a bit of catching up done. Getting ready to start fall broccoli and cabbage and getting some seed saving done.

Nasty outbreak of Japanese beetles, so far damage has been minimal, though I did hit the grapes with diamataceous earth after I saw a few on those.

Pics!

Red Verona Chicory flowering to save for seed.

Four Seasons Lettuce going to seed

Tomato cages. Field fence, electric fence post stakes, and grass for mulch.

Some wildflower I'd never seen growing in the pasture before.

I’m so jealous. I planted 5 zukes and they have huge lucious green leaves and lots of flowers, but not one zuke all summer.

I chopped down all the tomatoes because of the bugs so am hoping they’ll sprout back. If not, I saved some seeds. Didn’t get any seeds saved from the little cherries which tasted like candy so I might be out of luck there.

It was down right freezing here last week with temps hovering around 99. This week it’s back up in the 100s and still no rain in sight.

The week before Father’s Day, I hung dill in the sunroom because the dehydrator was full. Came back a week later to find a bunch of chubby caterpillars munching away and pooping everywhere. After an Internet search, I realized they are Black Swallowtail Butterflies. I went from disgust to delight. A female emerged from her chrysalis earlier this week (she had only orange-yellow spots). Two males have emerged this morning. The one with wing damage was a rogue caterpillar that crawled out of the box and hid. But he can still fly. Both are still on the windowsill. It’s overcast so they might hangout a while.

Thought y’all would enjoy this from drought stricken Texas. The small town of Llano was under water restrictions and was getting low on drinking water what with the river drying up. This drought is breaking records back to 1895. Yes, that’s 1895. A dowser saved the day.

If the high pressure dome gets equalized soon, we would get more moisture in the air. There is not a single cloud in the sky at the moment.

We are in Ocean City, Maryland. It is close to home for us (about three hours away without traffic). I won’t get into detail because the gardening thread is sort of non-political but Ocean City has changed quite a bit. We no longer go to the boardwalk for safety reasons. We go to the beach near the Delaware line (right before Fenwick). We have saved and saved and saved for a vacation for next year. (I save my coupon money and stuff it in an envelope in my sock drawer). We hope to see the Florida Keys next year. I have been researching and researching but still somewhat confused. It sounds like each “Key” is very different from the other ones.

Your veggie dish sounds absolutely fantastic. Not only is it tasty and nutritious but low calorie as well. If I eat a plate (or two or three) of garden vegetables... I will definitely lose some weight. That is saying a lot because I think my metabolism isn’t the best in the world. How often can one say that they had a “diet dinner” and it felt like you cheated because it tasted sooo GOOD!

I promise to send it to you when we get back home. My kids actually ask for it as a side for Thanksgiving. Granted, I know some folks don’t like casseroles even if they are side dishes. I love them. My FIL described himself as a purist because he wanted a meat and vegetables with a roll on the side. If you put a casserole in front of him, he would just shake his head. (maybe it is what you are use to growing up?!)

I love casseroles! Here is one I am going to try using some of the recommendations from others who have tried it.
