My sister stopped over this morning. We got back to talking about moving to another state....again.

She stated Texas has been calling her, she is an RN. The hospital she works at now used to have several booths, recruiting new grads. Now they have none. They are constantly invited to "luncheons", in which they do not participate. They have stopped hiring, as I have found out trying to find a new job.

My sister said they are encouraging recent grads to go to Texas, to get their bacholers & RN license.

I know, from FR, TX is booming. My sister has a friend who moved back to Houston, TX, owns 3 homes in which he rents and said he could get me a great paying job in the oil industry (I hehehe'd at that one).

With my sisters RN license, she wouldn't have a problem getting a job, and perhaps at the rate she is paid here in NY.

We are very nervous about leaving our home state, been here all our lives.....but they are killing us. She asked me to post a thread, specifically to TX FReepers, just for some information regarding the Houston area.

We are suburanites and very Conservative. We would NOT bid well in ANY area that is slightly blue.

We also have questions regarding weather. I (and my sister) must claim "stupid" regarding this subject. We are used to 4 seasons, etc. How is the Houston area, or it's suburbs(must be suburbs. We CANNOT live in a "city" type area).

If I remember correctly (in which she pointed out) Austin is lib, correct?

The last thing we want to do is move across county, only to wind up in a mini NY.

To all you Texans out there, any information would be grateful, especially around the Houston area.

anyways, come on down, but don’t be fooled, even though things may be better here, they aren’t smooth sailing by any means....I’ve been outta work for over a year, my step mom, who has worked for the same company for 27 years, was laid off in march, and my hubby was laid off last month, but he found another job where he has to drive twice as far....and he said 90% of the people he works with don’t speak English...

Tyler is an incredible medical hub. I had no idea when I bought my property. Check out the local paper, The Tyler Morning Telegraph classifieds. Pages and pages of medical jobs. And East Texas is so green and beautiful, not at all like dry, dusty West Texas.

By north of DFW I mean that Denton county is located north of the DFW area. Denton county, Tarrant county, and Dallas county make up what is sometimes referred to as the "Golden Triangle." There are lots of reference to that up here - Denton has a Golden Triangle Mall and Fort Worth has a Golden Triangle Boulevard.



I moved here 18 years ago when I left the Marines (I'm originally from Arkansas, but don't hold that against me.) and I am very happy here.

Frisco, located in Collin county is also a very nice place to live.

There are many hospitals and doctors offices all over DFW so getting a job as an RN should not be an issue. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital here in Denton is new and always seems to be looking for employees.

Corporate AP/AR jobs? There are corporations out the wazzoo here...

As well as many endodonic practices.

Anywho, thanks for the info. We need to get the heck out of NY, but I think I will have to go alone.....then my sister will follow. Even though she is the older one, I have to make the 1st move.

It took me a while to get her into the Tea Party, but once she stepped foot into it, she became hooked.

Rush has always said to have 1 person you go to for facts. I am now her person to do so....and compared to other FReepers I know crap!

However what I do not know, I tell her I don't know but will find out. Thanks to FR and it's wonderful Freepers I find out.

I am sure you have received plenty of advice by now but as a person born and Houston, and lived most of my life in Houston I might be able to help with some of your questions.

1. Don’t listen to the people that have never lived here or who haven’t lived here in the last 10 years.
2. Downtown Houston is liberal because most of it’s inner city residences are on the poor side of the coin (like most large cities), the burbs are predominately middle class conservatives.
3. Stick to the Southwest, West and Northwest areas of town. Spring, Sugar Land, Woodlands, and Katy are all in these areas. They are newer developed, areas for the most part, or areas that can not be annex by the City of Houston.
4. We have four seasons here; the problem is three of them are referred to Summer. The fourth is Christmas.
5. There are hospitals (Memorial Herman, St. Lukes, Methodist) and clinics (Kelsey-Seybold) all over town so RN positions should not be tough to find. At least one of these hospitals/clinics is located in any of the towns I listed above.
6. We have NO state income tax!!!
7. Oil companies are everywhere, but the majority of the major players are inside the loop (610) or downtown.
8. Try to live close (within 10 miles) to a major freeway or toll road if you have to work downtown or inside the loop. Traffic in this town can be very bad.

I can go on if you want just shoot me a FRmail. A little info on me: I am 35, currently live in Katy, work near the Galleria area, and am dating a girl in the Woodlands. I was born and raised in Spring, lived in the downtown, mid-town, up-town and galleria areas before buying a house in Katy. My parents were born and raised in upstate NY but moved here in the early 70’s. I love Houston.

If you or your sister are liberal yankees than please don’t come here. If not, you are more then welcome to come and adopt our way of life.

I can understand your fear, but just remember that Texans are among the friendliest people you will ever meet. I guarantee you would make friends very quickly here. I think you would be quite happy living in Texas.

May I suggest you look into the Abilene, Texas area?

Here you’ll find two hospitals (Abilene Regional Medical Center, and Hendrick Medical Center), and numerous medical offices surrounding both. They are on far opposite sides of town- Hendrick is much older, and far larger. I’ve been doing the vending at ARMC for over eight years, and have seen many of the same faces there over that entire time.

A nurse here probably doesn’t make as much as one in New York- but you don’t need to. I suspect that you would be shocked at how low the cost of living is here.

You will also find three universities, two colleges, and an Air Force base- all of which lead to the town having a fairly large population of transient(ish) young people. The place is a magnet, though- many people move back here after moving away (myself included- it’s just so *easy* to live here!).

As to culture, there’s far more available here than many people realize. All three universities have theater departments (two of them I know myself to be excellent), and both amateur and touring plays/musicals are available. Not to mention the assorted rodeos/western events. Oh, and guns shows every three months or so :)

Plenty of small surrounding towns as close or as far away as you like. I live in one of them (grew up here), and it takes me twenty minutes from my door to my work. I’ve never seen a traffic jam here in my life.

Conservative area? Check! Churches? Check! (take your pick- well over a hundred in Abilene alone.) Gun culture? Check! We’re bitter clingers to the end, around here! If you and your sis move here, I’ll promise to take you shooting myself.

Yes, it’s *HOT* here in the summer, but hardly ever humid. The winters are mostly mild, and you and your sister would be afforded great amusement watching us Texans try to cope with what would seem mild weather to you (we always get a kick out of yankees complaining about 80 degree weather). We did get iced in for four days last winter- that’s about as bad as it gets, usually.

I admit, you’d probably get come comments on your accents, but not as many as you might suspect. With an Air Force base and all those schools here, it’s not at all unusual to hear a strange accent. The only problem, usually, is that New Yorkers talk faster than we can listen :)

Oh, and if you ever feel the need to be in a big city, Fort Worth is less than two hours down I-20, and Dallas not even another hour further.

A little friendly advice to help you get along; Don't ever ever make light of Texas history. Don't ever make fun of the food, music, natives or anything else uniquely Texan. Don't ever remind us of how much better something was back home.

Yes, Abilene is like a small-town city. No overpasses, etc. Such an easy city to drive. I didn’t even think of it, yet I take my parents to their doctors there, occassionally.
