The University of Nebraska-Lincoln took a hard blow to its academic reputation when it was kicked out of an organization of the nations top research universities this week.
It was the first time ever that the now 62-member Association of American Universities had voted to remove a member.

Any thoughts from Huskers?
Naaa, they proably were just not hiring enough liberal professors.
Oooops! probably has two “b”s in it doesn’t it
UNL's Chancellor Harvey Perlman characterizes this move as "disconcerting news" in his letter to colleagues.
Very likely a professor or university-affiliated institute published research debunking global warming.
Black eye for the University. If they want it back they will need to bring the Medical Center back under their umbrella, they will also get a boost from the CIC. The real problem is that the university is comprehensive and balkanize, also most of their research money comes from the usda(which the AAU doesnt count) so they will need to look at other ways of bringing in research dollars.
I went to a private Christian college (now a university) so the AAU wasn't even on my radar screen some 50 years ago. I'm still only tangentially aware of the organization. Is AAU membership really that important to a university in terms of prestige?
It does seem that since UNL was among the very earliest of members, getting kicked out is, as you indicated, a black eye even with the caveats of the source of their research funding and the separate medical facility.
In the end degrees come down to school prestige and/or what you make of the diploma. Individual school rankings(ie architecture, law etc) will likely remain unaffected but overall the degree will be worth a little less.
Yes, bring back the med school and NIH funding with it. USDA overhead is only about 23% or so, while NIH, EPA, and others pay the full 50% or thereabouts. It is all about research funding and overhead dollars.
The new research center will also help as well. I am just amazed that the AAU ,which is based on research, simply doesnt weigh USDA dollars equally. If the USDA money was weighed Nebraska would have been ranked higher in the AAU and would not be threatened with expulsion. Lets face it though the chancellors, regents etc new for the last decade that they will be targeted and simply didn’t do what was needed to stabilize the tenuous position with in the AAU.
What is worth more — both intellectually and financially:
A degree in gender studies from Harvard, or
An agricultural economics degree from Nebraska?
That’s why I said individual school rankings are still important. But lets face it, some paper is worth more than others, even a useless major like the one you listed will get your feet into a lot of places that lesser schools couldn’t get you in to.
This is hilarious! Especially as a Mizzou alumni. When Mizzou was rumored as going to the Big 10, there was some consternation by many in the Big 10 that Mizzou did not have the “academic credentials” to be in a conference with the likes of Northwestern and Michigan. So they go out and get a corn school to join their conference, and this happens..guess its all about football then. So I hope the Big 10 enjoys the Nubs and Bo Pellini
I’ve always been told that the “N” stands for (k)nowledge.
>> Oooops! probably has two bs in it doesnt it
No B’s, 2 L’s ....
prolly
Bitter much? I mean you even went with the word “nubs” like a five year old, you aren’t five are you? You guys simply didn’t have what the Big Ten wanted in sports, in sports revenue, and the rest. It wasn’t about education with you guys, they simply didn’t want another bottom feeding sports department.
