It’s also mating season. And Cotton Mouths are very aggressive during mating season.
Right out of high school I worked on a survey team surveying swamps in Eastern Arkansas. They would actually attack if you got too close or if you bothered them while they were “mating”. We’d kill 5 or 6 a day with sling blades. It was for the government so we weren’t allowed to carry a gun. I quit the day we had to shoot a line accross a “lake” where you could see the snakes all entangled with each other.

I killed 3 of them last year.
Interestingly, I spotted two of them while looking out the window while on the computer. The third was near my AC unit.
None of them were very near water.
