Thanks to a controversial legislative maneuver, Wisconsin's Republican Governor Scott Walker's plan to end collective bargaining for his public employees passed the state senate Wednesday night. Now, in a stunning show of solidarity with their teachers—who, as union members, now have no bargaining rights—Wisconsin's high school students are planning a grassroots school walkout, and they want to take their protest national.
Wisconsin Students in Solidarity is asking for the nationwide walkout to happen this Friday, March 11, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. local time. Less than 12 hours after being formed, the Facebook event, Nationwide Student Walkout, has almost 2,000 "attendees" from across the country and student-led copycat groups and events are springing up on the social media hub.
In an email, the coordinator Jesse Banks, a senior at Wisconsin's Madison East High School said the group is calling for national participation
not only to send a unified student message in support of teachers and schools, but again to use this as an opportunity to educate students around the nation on the attacks on public education that are occurring in Wisconsin. There are students everywhere who care about these issues and we want to encourage them to make their voices heard, to get active and get involved.
Banks said the Wisconsin protests have had a "strong high school presence" over the past several weeks. Apparently, the idea for the walkout "came out of an entirely student-run meeting." Given the enormity of the decision made by the Wisconsin legislature, the students, "wanted to do something that added visibility to how the attacks on unions and schools are harmful to kids."
Banks acknowledged that some student participants "will be better informed than others, just as some adults are better informed than others." To make the walkout educational, the students are also holding a teach-in on the Library Mall in downtown Madison to discuss the "effects of collective bargaining elimination on public education, as well as the proposed education cuts in the Biennial Budget."
With these student-led protest efforts underway, it's a little harder to make the case that teens are apathetic and don't care about social issues. Whether you agree with their decision to walkout or not, this is democracy and free speech in action.

...you can't fix stupid.....
...but, most of them will straighten out when the grow up and get into the real world..
..but sadly...

Maybe someone should discuss with them the corruption and "sweetheart deals" like the health insurance company owned by the union, how much it's costing the taxpayers, and what it's going to do to their state's budgets and future tax burden if it's allowed to continue.
A controversial legislative maneuver would be leaving the state to avoid a quorum, or Pelosi's "deeming" or unaccountable voice votes. All that happened here is that the senators present in session passed a bill with a simple majority. How is that a "legislative maneuver"?
I don’t understand why should the stupid students care? This collective bargaining doesn’t affect them! It affects the teachers.
Pawns in a fight for selfishness. Parents should be besides themselves. Isn’t it enough when the parents are held hostage with the yearly school budget where the children are sent home to tell the parents if you dont vote yes for this budget they will cancel sports, music or Ill have to be driven to school because there will be no buses. How about the many times the budget is voted down and they continue to call for a vote unitl they wear you down and smaller and smaller crowds show up to vote and they get their way. I think it’s time for the parents to be parents!
They’d REALLY protest their government if they knew that the adults in charge are writing checks the kids are going to have to PAY for the rest of their lives (working until their 80s).
Tell the little brats that if they don’t end collective bargaining, they won’t be getting an allowance anymore. Or those cool shoes and clothes they love so well. Because it’ll all be going to pay for the teachers excessive benefits.
I have 3 kids at UW Madison. I guess I raised them right, or maybe they are sensitive to the fact that I pay out of state tuition. They think the students who cheer for this are, as Lenin used to say, “useful idiots.”
I would unleash all sorts of parental hell on my kids were they dumb enough to do this.
Every single high schooler who “walks out” should be expelled from school. Period. No questions asked.
When I was a kid. The very last thing I would have ever done is protest my teacher not being able to collectivly bargain. What a bunch of Saps.

This group is for the High-School and College students of Michigan and beyond who stand in solidarity with our colleagues in Wisconsin. While most of the media attention centers around Wisconsin, trouble is brewing in Michigan. Governor Snyder has proposed cuts to the education budget which would SEVERELY limit the effectiveness and success of Michigan Public schools. What the Governor does not seem to realize is that a short term cut in education to finance the deficit and to allow the “growth” of business through tax breaks (giving corporations profit) will result in a long term disaster. A dysfunctional school system would trap millions of middle and lower class students in low-paying, low-thinking jobs, or no jobs. We stand with Wisconsin now so that others will stand with us later.

As high school students, the Republican attacks on public education have a profound effect on us and our peers. Wisconsin Students in Solidarity is a statewide coalition, the goals of which are:
Outreach—To build a strong and cohesive network of high school students across the state.
Education—To make our voices heard regarding our unique perspective on these issues, both to adults and to our fellow students.
Action—To do whatever we can to support the people of Wisconsin, and to put our support behind candidates responsive to our interest in these issues.

A 2:00 Pm walk out is beyond the cutoff for funding based upon student attendance. It is considered a full school day and the kids won’t have to make it up and the state will be billed for full attendance.
There is a teacher or administrator in the background coaching them.
So how many make-up days for Wisconsin students factoring in the weather and rioting? School may not be out for summer.
Maybe some TEA party patriots could show up and hand them copies of The 5,000 Year Leap, read The Money Speech from Ayn Rand. Indeed make the walkout educational. Provide them with the bill they are incurring for every man, woman, and child in the future!
All the youts would have to do is to get the friggin rap noise out of their ears for a minute or two and they too would know.
Enough of this crap. The guilty enablers must be held accountable.
