If you could get a tablet for the price of a smart phone, and if it also worked on one of the new, faster, 4G-class cellular networks, youd jump at the chance, right? Dell and T-Mobile hope so, and thats why theyve brought out the Dell Streak 7, at just $200 with a two-year service contract.
The Streak 7, Dells second effort to compete with Apples $500 iPad, is the least expensive tablet Ive seen from a major manufacturer, and claims to be the first capable of 4G cellular speeds (it also has Wi-Fi). Like many planned iPad competitors, it runs Googles Android operating system. Its also the first Ive tested using a fast new processor from nVidia, the Tegra 2, which will power a number of new tablets this year.
Unfortunately, after a week of testing, I found the compromises Dell made to get to that low price make it impossible for me to recommend the Streak 7. Its screen, battery life, and software are all disappointing, and vastly inferior not only to the iPads, but also to those on the Samsung Galaxy Tab, a high-quality Android tablet about the size of the Streak 7 released late last year. In other words, you get what you pay for.

I shall never buy again from ding dong dell. Their tech support really sucks. “Peggy” is 1000 times better. I am stopping before I really get going. This is IMHO of course.
If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.
T-Mobile girl needs to eat something......
I don’t understand why people continue to compare this to the iPad. It’s not even in the same league, IMO. I’d be more likely to compare it to the iPhone. Seems to me that it’s a large smart phone.
I’m just sayin’
Nice legs, tho’!

Me neither. Last time I called I spoke to Tom in India. I said YOUR NAME IS NOT TOM!! And hung up.
I once worked with an Indian named Thomas who was a western Indian Christian. His family had been Christian for many years
I have a Dell desktop at home and I agree with you 100%. I had a warranty debacle over it in the 12 months it was covered. In short, I was included on a class action settlement against Dell in 2009. With their money awarded to me in the spring of that year, I bought an additional 1 year uber-warranty (knowing that my original warranty lacked the oomph of this better one). Then I had them fix my Dell like I had pushed for originally.
(My settlement award was for $265, which was based on the price of the one year uber-warranty). So in a nutshell, they fixed my PC with their own class action settlement money. What they lost, though was a buyer for life.
This has me thinking of a Yugo
I have yet to see any of the I-pad killers that will have much of a chance of seriously cashing in on this market. Apple has a strong advantage in not only being first to deliver this type of product, but has the infrastructure though its I-tunes that will be hard for competitors to duplicate. I am also impressed by how quickly the I-pad has taken off in some markets especially in the medical field.
Dell's second effort to compete with Appleâs $500 iPad... the first capable of 4G cellular speeds (it also has Wi-Fi)... runs Google's Android operating system... Tegra 2... Its screen, battery life, and software are all disappointing, and vastly inferior not only to the iPad's, but also to those on the Samsung Galaxy Tab:')
What some don't understand is that others, like me, would pay the $500 for the Apple product because I'm not going to replace it in two years when it gets overloaded with software & hardware failures and becomes a doorstop. Someone, mentioned above about the Dell 'pad'... you get what you pay for... and I would rather pay for quality.
