Davis was informed the next day.
Freedom in Seattle and Freedom in Idaho are two completely different concepts. Here, the large majority wishes to be left alone and succeed or fail on our own accord. There.. well, just don't tell them they can't smoke dope and marry their blue haired sister and you're good to go.
I have been to Gettysburg and I own, and have read, The Killer Angels. It brought tears to my eyes to read about the untimely death of so many young boys. If you havent read the book, do so.
Old historical films of Civil War Vets meeting at Gettysburg. Worth watching.

Slavery was the loser.
I disagree. They merely changed ownership of the plantation. We went from the Federal Government that the founders talked about, by force of arms...to a National Government. Where there are no checks on federal authority.
Lincoln made another big Government nationalist, Mr. Hamilton..look rather reasonable. In Federalist No. 26, he places hope in "the State legislatures, who will always be not only vigilant but suspicious and jealous guardians of the rights of the citizens against encroachments from the federal government, will constantly have their attention awake to the conduct of the national rulers, and will be ready enough, if any thing improper appears, to sound the alarm to the people, and not only to be the VOICE, but, if necessary, the ARM of their discontent."
That's probably the most accurate single sentence I've read on any WBTS thread in months.
The Articles of Confederation defined and delineated how we were going to run our Grand Experiment. It proved woefully inadequate to the task and was replaced with the US Constitution. From the beginning there appears to be variance as to what our union should look like, act like, and behave. There were some who felt that their state alliance with the union was akin to a social club to be enjoyed, to belly up to the bar and have your fill, and then cast it off when the tab needs to be paid.
IMO the largest disservice the founders did us was to blink and fail to address secession straight-up. It is apparent that representatives from several states had reservations about their new nation and expressed their concerns in their ratification statements. They did so instead of insisting on defining the process of leaving the union
That moral deficit left the door open for the davis's of this world to exploit.
Your second point is equally true. The issue isn't "coulda, shoulda, woulda" but rather "this is the true lay of the land and how do we deal with it". Conservatives are supposed to favor reason over emotion yet some "conservatives" continually molest the graves best left in peace in order to satisfy some sick obsession or perceived offense. The question of secession and the confederacy vis-à-vis the Civil War was settled long ago. There is no facet of conservatism served by continually dredging up the dead conflict and attempting to fan the passions that existed so long ago.
There is nothing conservative in perpetuating regional bigotry
IMO pursuing secession was foolish and irresponsible when the fire-eaters tried it in 1861 and it would be even more foolish now.
“zotting of ....Non-Sequitur.”
Are you serious????? Wow!!!
Please note the views of modern-day liberals.
The US is always wrong.
Except during the “Civil War”, when the US was always perfectly right.
We “sympathizers” tend to see it the other way. ;-)
Good statement. It is the Constitution that makes it great, not simply the geography and borders.
