"The withdrawal of a State from a league has no revolutionary or insurrectionary characteristic. The government of the State remains unchanged as to all internal affairs. It is only its external or confederate relations that are altered. To term this action of a Sovereign a 'rebellion' is a gross abuse of language."

He's an idiot for characterizing the US Constitution as a league. Would that it were so! Maybe that's why the CSA were dumb enough to create a government that wasn't a confederacy! I've always wondered why they did that. Sort of ironic...a confederacy that isn't a confederacy.
As an aside, I always thought Mrs. Jeff Davis was a hottie.

Jefferson Davis was elected President of the Confederate States of America.
Now there's a regrettable career move.

"Secession belongs to a different class of remedies. It is to be justified upon the basis that the States are Sovereign. There was a time when none denied it. I hope the time may come again, when a better comprehension of the theory of our Government, and the inalienable rights of the people of the States, will prevent any one from denying that each State is a Sovereign, and thus may reclaim the grants which it has made to any agent whomsoever."

It is to be justified upon the basis that the States are Sovereign. There was a time when none denied it. Right. Then they ratified the Constitution and all that changed.

Thanks for the history note. Also at your link Custer got married on that day.
Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the present we forget to keep track of the past.

“Conceiving that an individual independence of the States is utterly irreconcileable with their aggregate sovereignty; and that a consolidation of the whole into one simple republic would be as inexpedient as it is unattainable, I have sought for some middle ground, which may at once support a due supremacy of the national authority, and not exclude the local authorities wherever they can be subordinately useful.

Right. Then they ratified the Constitution and all that changed. If you think the signers thought for one second that it would take war to exit the Constitutional Republic, they would have signed it? If you think that then you HAVE NO UNDERSTANDING of the founding of this republic.
The USC is totally silent on the issue of secession for a reason.
You are either very young or very ignorant.

Question: do any books deal with the subject of what would have happened if the Confederacy was successful? Would it have become a jumping off point for foreign interference (ie. British/French) in North America once again? Would it have held together? What would the economy have looked like 20 or 40 years on?

Davis was just like Jimmy Carter, a Democrat who was soundly rejected by the American people during his first term.
