That's probably the most accurate single sentence I've read on any WBTS thread in months.
The Articles of Confederation defined and delineated how we were going to run our Grand Experiment. It proved woefully inadequate to the task and was replaced with the US Constitution. From the beginning there appears to be variance as to what our union should look like, act like, and behave. There were some who felt that their state alliance with the union was akin to a social club to be enjoyed, to belly up to the bar and have your fill, and then cast it off when the tab needs to be paid.
IMO the largest disservice the founders did us was to blink and fail to address secession straight-up. It is apparent that representatives from several states had reservations about their new nation and expressed their concerns in their ratification statements. They did so instead of insisting on defining the process of leaving the union
That moral deficit left the door open for the davis's of this world to exploit.
Your second point is equally true. The issue isn't "coulda, shoulda, woulda" but rather "this is the true lay of the land and how do we deal with it". Conservatives are supposed to favor reason over emotion yet some "conservatives" continually molest the graves best left in peace in order to satisfy some sick obsession or perceived offense. The question of secession and the confederacy vis-à-vis the Civil War was settled long ago. There is no facet of conservatism served by continually dredging up the dead conflict and attempting to fan the passions that existed so long ago.
There is nothing conservative in perpetuating regional bigotry
IMO pursuing secession was foolish and irresponsible when the fire-eaters tried it in 1861 and it would be even more foolish now.

You, my dear libtard, seaweed eating Greenpeace whale worshiper, cake eaters anonymous founder are no conservative. I'd bet you spend your Friday nights down at the gay bar along with that sidekick of yours garbage_truck, blowing in each others ear, while wishing they belonged to that President of yours. That big eared dumbo himself, Obama...
“IMO the largest disservice the founders did us was to blink and fail to address secession straight-up.”
1st off, re: earlier post, secession is not in itself “revolution” OR “coup”.
2nd, re: this quote, perhaps it’s because they just went through attempts at “secession”, per se, and then a revolution themselves. And knew what that was about.
Kind of puts the lie to Yankee protestations about the superiority of the “Union”/Federal Gov above all else. By these views, the colonies’ rebellion was illegal and we should be back to England. Or was it just moot to you, since it’s done now?
"Rebellion is always an option!!"--Jim Robinson
Oh no, not local loyalty. Anything but that.
