An Anomalous SETI Signal

Explanation: No one knows for sure what caused this signal.
There is a slight possibility that it just might originate from an extraterrestrial intelligence.
The bright colors on the blue background indicate that an anomalous signal was received here on Earth by a radio telescope involved in a Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI).
A search for these signals is ongoing by several groups including volunteer members of the SETI League.
Time labels the vertical axis of the above plot, and frequency marks the horizontal axis.
Although this strong signal was never positively identified, astronomers have identified in it many attributes characteristic of a more mundane and ultimately terrestrial origin.
In this case, a leading possibility is that the signal originates from an unusual modulation between a GPS satellite and an unidentified Earth-based source.
Many unusual signals from space remain unidentified.
No signal has yet been strong enough or run long enough to be unambiguously identified as originating from an extraterrestrial intelligence.

Great analogy. I think sometimes we forget that civilizations that could make faster-than-light propulsion drives could probably also master faster-than-light comms.

I suppose we aren’t going to be able to do much about THAT illegal alien problem. Not that we do much about the other one either.

Dude, the Uranians have looong walked among us.

Yup. IMHO, we're pretty arrogant for assuming that they'd want to talk to us. For instance, you're aware of the ants in your driveway, but you're not going to sit outside and try to have a conversation with them.
Frankly, though, I think that interstellar space is too vast for much, if any, communication and travel. Just my opinion, though, it's just as valuable as anyone else's.

I like to view Waxman as more of a Klingon orbiting Uranus.

More embarrassing will be the day our EM cluttered signal of porn reaches ‘others’. What would we think of a civilization which was so obsessed with the physical characteristics and interactions of a faux procreative nature? Our planet is wrapped in the EM smut of our porn transmissions. What good Angel would even approach such a cesspool of obsession? ... What devil could resist it!

My people said they were coming for me. I told them to hold off until the Mariners win the World Series. They’ll be back after an orbit or two...of the galaxy...

If they want us to know they are out there, they can stoop to our level and bang messages out on hollow logs with long sticks.
Very good point, and a reason I have always been skeptical of 'UFOs'. Not that I don't think extraterrestrial life exists, just that if they could come here from interstellar space, they would be so vastly superior to us that, if they didn't want us to see them, there would be no 'accidental' sightings such as what we see now. I could be wrong, it's happened before.

Yup. IMHO, we're pretty arrogant for assuming that they'd want to talk to us. For instance, you're aware of the ants in your driveway, but you're not going to sit outside and try to have a conversation with them. Stanley Kubrick gave a Playboy interview after 2001: A Space Odyssey came out.
In response to a question about the form of possible alien intelligences he said (and I paraphrase),
"If an ant on the ground scratches out 'Let's talk,' I'm not going to step on him. "
