Probably a tasty spider nest in the corner of the statue’s mouth...ick, but squirrels do go for these things.
In any case, the origin of the description “squirrely” sure isn’t hard to find!

Around my place, we call squirrels (and rabbits) “Free range kibble.”
Our dogs always ask what this “lamb and rice” stuff is, and why don’t we get the “rabbit and squirrel” flavor when we get the dog food.
I think the dogs have finally learned to leave the white striped on black free range kibble alone. That didn’t work out so well, the few times they tried it.
