Faced with a diminished drug-development pipeline in the private sector, the Obama administration is starting a federal drug development center, aiming to spur the creation of new medicines.
The new National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences will get $1 billion in funding to conduct drug research with the goal of attracting private investors. Federal scientists may go so far as to start human trials if necessary, the New York Times reports. Federal officials want the center to open as soon as October.

Sounds like another way to soak up more taxpayer dollars.

Oh, for goodness sakes!! Is there anything this government will not try to take over and knock out free market competition?
Gee, from the people who brought you Obmacare. lol.
People are missing the concept about private sector and public sector.
If their first medicine kills instead of heals, will they be held accountable? Or will the taxpayers have to shell out?
Can’t wait for my government drugs.
Can my family sue if they kill me? Or because “the gubmint” makes them they are immune from lawsuits?
I don’t know why I worry, there will never be one drug that ever makes it out of this place anyway. even if they did make something half-useful it’d be so m-f expensive they’d never offer it.
No no no no no. This is bad bad bad bad bad.
Imagine trying to sue over bad side affects. The guy in charge will get a promotion and the taxpayers have to shell out $$$.
dang
The government should not be in any business it taxes.
Can you say super-boondogle?
Sure you can sue. The taxpayers will shell out. The people in charge will get promotions and bonuses.
And, this is covered under what section of the US Constitution? Better they should spend a couple of hours determining why there is diminished private sector development, rather than start down a new anti-Constitutional path, IMO... (Hint: Mirror)
Can the Federal Government just do this sort of thing for anything at all? Like could they just say “we’re going to make government soft drinks now” or whatever? No discussions, no votes, no debates? Just fiat done deal?
Oh great! Look for a Viagra/Salt Peter combo from these bozos.
I guess since Barry set the precedent, none of those employed in the new Ministry of Drugs needs any background education or proof of citizenship either.
“Can you say super-boondogle?”
As in the California fetal stem cell research bonds which went 100% down the rat hole. You can always count on California to lead the way.
how else do you think obama can increase the one stat that might save him...employment.... by becoming the employer....
