Eric Mangini was fired by the Browns after two 5-11 seasons as coach, a move that was expected. The team made the announcement just after 10 a.m. ET.
Team president Mike Holmgren released a statement that read: "This decision was not easy for me, and it was one into which I put a great deal of thought. Although we have made improvements this season, my responsibility is to ensure that we establish a program that will allow this team to compete at a championship level. That will continue to be our goal in everything we do. I want to thank Eric for all of his contributions to the Cleveland Browns, and wish him and his family the best of luck in the future."

But, in most cases after the first of the 10 or 15 scripted plays, plays are called with the flow of the game and situation. I am sure that Garret made out most of the O game plan. Phillips has never been much of an O coach. He is a D coach, thus the rumored DC job with Houston.

No worries, there are many more where that came from. The Browns are one of the worst organizations in the NFL, and it starts at the top. Randy “Slow” Lerner is a soccer owner and fan. The Browns are his cash cow, but he could not care less whether they are successful.
The Browns are a disaster. They should have just put that team to death and been done with it in 1995.
No coach who likes to run things himself will work for Jerry Jones.
Cower would be a great hire, but don’t think he could work for Jerry.
Jason Garrett has proven himself to me and may be smart enough to work with Jerry and let Jerry think he’s running things, but still get his own way about assistant coaches, etc.
Its not the Coach’s fault that Cleveland sucks... but gotta blame someone I guess.

The Bengals are, consistently, the NFL’s worst franchise. As an owner, Mike Brown is the fastest in league history to 200 losses AND the slowest to 100 wins. Marvin Lewis is finished there.
Mark my words, the Browns will hoist a Super Bowl Trophy before the Bengals ever will. I hear Gruden is their guy.
The Bengals will hire a lap-dog milquetoast who is okay with low pay, no GM, no indoor practice facility and Mikey-Boy Brown making EVERY personnel decision. Hell, if Mikey-Boy could have gotten away with it, he would have named Dave Shula coach for life.
The problem the offense was having wasn’t the play calling, it was the execution. Phillips is a “players coach”, they’re generally marked by easy going practices and not a lot of tough drills. First day of the Garret regime was marked by a bunch of drills. Drills exist for a reason, execution improved.
Urban is done coaching, he would lose all credibility if he takes another coaching job, after he steps down citing health issues and wanting to be more with his family.
Urban’s next job will be Florida AD when Jeremy Foley retires.
Garrett should know the organization as well as anyone, the good and the bad. He was Aikman's backup, so he's been around for quite a while and knows what he'd be dealing with. It's probably his dream job.

The NFL has shown its absolute contempt for Cleveland, first of all by allowing a losing business manager and owner to yank the team out of Cleveland and move the whole franchise to Baltimore, a city that was within less than 100 miles of a couple of franchises, a city where he once again was a total failure and had to sell the Ravens.
Then the NFL pouted that the taxpayers would have to built a new stadium for the NFL, not the NFL to supply the money, but the taxpayers. And the taxpayers fell into line and not only built the stadium at their own expense, but allowed PSLs to creep their ugly head into the picture ($1500 per pop) . . . something the football-starved fans fell for and gobbled up. Then NFL placated the Cleveland fans by “allowing” us to keep the records and logo (wow!).
Then, they gave us flunky players, left over players, morons for coaches, a non-domed stadium that was worthless except for 10 games a year, all this while the Clevelanders watched our franchise that was moved to Baltimore thrive, win a couple Super Bowls, and be in contention year after year.
This pathetic situation continues in Cleveland with quarterback after quarterback and coaches after coaches draining the pockets of very wonderful but misguided fans . . . our punishment for being a non-media mighty city. God bless Green Bay for staying firm against the NFL moguls. They were forced to build a new stadium for the NFL and come up with PSLs, but they continue to have the fans own the team rather than the NFL.
It’s pathetic and very sad here in Cleveland. This is a fantastic sports town being laughed at by every major sports empire and football followers around the country. Mangini is gone (how many is it now?), but who’s the next lame coach to be brought into town?
I work Sunday afternoons, so I don’t get to watch Steeler games...just listen to them (religiously) on radio. Yesterday Tunch Ilkin (does Stillerz play by play) was incredulous to that FG. He couldn’t wrap his mind around it all.
The Cowboys offense IMPROVED AFTER their HC was fired!! How is that possible?

All the reports I’ve seen are that it’s all but a done deal that the Cowboys will be hiring Garrett as their permanent head coach.
LOLz...but, we HAVE fireworks AND Bobbleheads. Note to Pirates, there is A LOT of local talent at local colleges (UPJ; Cal and Seton Hill). I am just saying...save money, drum up local support. I HATE that they do goofy stuff like go to India (last year). (Sorry for thread hijack).
I disagree. He held onto Wade Phillips way to long, after most other owners would have fired him.
I grew up on Pirate baseball. Spent many a summer evening out in the left field bleachers at Forbes Field watching my heroes Willie Stargell and Bobby Clemente. From the 60’s through shortly after 1980, I could rattle off most of the players on the team. My parents could do the same back into the mid 1930’s.
Baseball has scant few heroes today for me. And football is going down the same path, with a few exceptions. And now that the Rooney family has thanked their god Obama for that last Super Bowl win, as soon as the Stillers suck again I’ll write them off forever.
