(Vanity Question) Obama, Iraq, and WMD
me

Posted on 12/19/2010 8:25:00 PM PST by RangerM

It's been (or seems to have been) a widely-held position on the left that Saddam Hussein did NOT have WMD, nor was he a threat to the U.S., its allies, or interests.

I did a Google search for anything Obama has said since taking office that would confirm or deny the left's widely-held belief that Bush lied us into war, but came up empty.

Since becoming President, Obama has been in a position to resolve the matter (for the left) once and for all. Has he?

Interesting read at this link:

Obama thought Saddam haad WMDs

Snips: While Obama has clearly been against the war from the start, it’s interesting what the first ellipsis reveals:

Barack OBama: “He has repeatedly defied UN resolutions, thwarted UN inspection teams, developed chemical and biological weapons, and coveted nuclear capacity. He’s a bad guy.”

So in 2002, despite echoing President Bush’s reasons for going to war with Iraq (and that that Saddam had WMD), Obama still didn’t support going to war against Saddam?

Thanks for the link. Hadn’t heard that (Obama excerpt) before. I can understand why he had kept it quiet.

What brought it to my mind is his recent “revelation” that tax increases hurt an economy and tax cuts help it. I started wondering of other flip-flops that President Obama has made compared to candidate Obama.

There are tons of Democrat quotes regarding Saddam’s danger to the U.S. and the rest of the world.

This is one argument that I always win with Lefties on the ground.

There’s not much they can do and say when it comes to RATS and their support for thwarting Saddam.

I also love how that complain about “Bush’s wars” to this day, but have no comprehension of the fact that their buddies in Congress have been funding them for the last 4 years.

I’d call this more than a flip flop. He completely abandoned his entire foundation, I think.

He tried to blame tax cuts for causing this depression we’re in. If he really believed this he would have done everything to stop this; he would veto.

The problem for him is, I don’t think he can pull a Clinton. Too many people wonder about his past. We’ll see.

Too many people wonder about his past.

Obama has his personal documentation under lock, key and the highest level of security possible. Too bad he didn't have the same priorities for government secrets. I wonder if, in our lifetime, we'll ever learn what he is hiding from us.

Here is something I post from to time.

The temor and pointedness are not directed to you but for nOOb Trolls.

First, Bill Clinton and the entire Senate, that’s all 100 senators, signed the 1998 Iraq Liberation Act. The state goal was to overthrow Saddam Insane and his entire regime and replace it with a democratic government.

That is a fact:
The Act found that between 1980 and 1998 Iraq had:

1. committed various and significant violations of International Law,
2. had failed to comply with the obligations to which it had agreed following the Gulf War and
3. further had ignored Resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.

See here for a quick Wiki that makes it a short read:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_Liberation_Act

Don’t forget to read the part where Clinton states categorically what Iraq admitted to.

Bottom line we knew as did the French, Germans, Italians, South African Nations, N. Korea(our intel on them) and many others what Saddam was attempting to acquire and what he already had

WHICH INCLUDED:
550 METRIC TONS of YELLOW CAKE. USED FOR MAKING NUCLEAR WEAPONS.

MORE THAN 500 SARIN AND MUSTARD GAS LACED BOMBS.

There is plenty more but lets look at some of the lefts vaunted leaders and what they had to say at various times:

Let’s start with Al Gore criticizing George Bush 41 for ignoring Iraq’s ties to terrorism
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JE48XHKG64

Or how about this hit from 1998 Al Gore: No Doubt Saddam’s Weapons Are Grave Threat:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFBl0fnMUVc&feature=related

Hey what about a guy that was once in Vietnam John Kerry saying he found WMD in Iraq
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IH93UlGHBfk&feature=related

Hey even Nancy Pelosi claims Iraq had WMD and she seems pretty unequivocal
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwDJRBOsj78&feature=related

Here is a greatest hits of Democrats who in no certain terms absolutely claimed Iraq had Weapons of Mass Destruction. They made these claims on more than one occasion and with specificity. The quotes are from Madeline Albright, Bill Clinton, Howard Dean, Sandy Berger, Nancy Pelosi, Jay Rockefeller, Joe Biden, Harry Reid, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards:
3 minutes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnjcofMFHsA&feature=related

Here is a 6 minute video of other Democrats on Iraq’s WMD and how it would be irresponsible to leave Saddam unchecked;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i87cZ3Og6ts&feature=fvw

So who is the liar? Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Madeline Albright, et al?

Surely they knew Saddam had WMD. Bill Clinton did after all launch missiles on Iraq in an attempt to destroy some of them.

Also from my files...an explanation:

"The administration does not want the victims of Sept. 11 interfering with its foreign policy," says Peter M. Leitner, director of the Washington Center for Peace and Justice (WCPJ). Leitner says the Bush administration may be concerned that if other victims of the Sept. 11 attacks also filed lawsuits and won civil-damage awards it would reduce Iraqi resources that the administration wants to use to rebuild the country. Leitner and others say this explains Bush's reticence at this time to report the convincing evidence linking Saddam and al-Qaeda that has been collected by U.S. investigators and private organizations seeking damages. "The [Bush] administration is intentionally changing the topic," claims Leitner, and sidestepping the issue that "Iraq has been in a proxy war against the U.S. for years and has used al-Qaeda in that war against the United States."

Source

As for connections, the MSM has a very short memory...from news archives:

In in 1998, an Arab intelligence officer, who knows Saddam personally, predicted in Newsweek: "Very soon you will be witnessing large-scale terrorist activity run by the Iraqis." The Arab official said these terror operations would be run under "false flags" --spook-speak for front groups--including bin Laden's organization.

Then there were the predictions by an Iraqi with ties to Iraqi intelligence, Naeem Abd Mulhalhal, in Qusay's own newspaper several weeks before the attacks that stated bin Laden would “demolish the Pentagon after he destroys the White House and ”bin Laden would strike America “on the arm that is already hurting.” (referencing a second IRAQI sponsored attack on the World Trade Center). Another reference to New York was “[bin Laden] will curse the memory of Frank Sinatra everytime he hears his songs.” (e.g., “New York, New York”) which identified New York, New York as a target. Mulhalhal also stated, “The wings of a dove and the bullet are all but one and the same in the heart of a believer." which references an airplane attack.

The Arabic language daily newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabic also cited the cooperation between Iraq, bin Laden and Al December 1998 editorial, which predicted that “President Saddam Hussein, whose country was subjected to a four day air strike, will look for support in taking revenge on the United States and Britain by cooperating with Saudi oppositionist Osama Bin-Laden, whom the United States considers to be the most wanted person in the world.” This info is in the link provided below. How could these people have had foreknowledge without Iraq being involved?

Source for this info

Warning...slow loading .pdf file. This was from a lawsuit filed against Iraq after 9/11...the court ruled against Iraq.

There was also another lawsuit filed by the family of John O’Neill (a former FBI agent who captured Ramzi Yousef after the 1993 WTC bombings) after he died in the WTC on 9/11. His personal files from his years of traveling around the world investigating al-Qaeda are were used as evidence in the lawsuit. The evidence includes documents unearthed in the headquarters of the Mukhabarat (Iraq's intelligence service) and information gleaned from the interrogation of both al-Qaeda and Iraqi prisoners. (Link below). It also quotes Vincent Cannistraro, the former CIA counter-terrorism chief, who stated in October 2000 that Iraq had been wanting to carry out terrorist attacks, and that the Iraqi military had been in contact with Osama bin Laden.

We know from these IIS documents that beginning in 1992 the former Iraqi regime regarded bin Laden as an Iraqi Intelligence asset. We know from IIS documents that the former Iraqi regime provided safe haven and financial support to an Iraqi who has admitted to mixing the chemicals for the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center. We know from IIS documents that Saddam Hussein agreed to Osama bin Laden's request to broadcast anti-Saudi propaganda on Iraqi state-run television. We know from IIS documents that a "trusted confidante" of bin Laden stayed for more than two weeks at a posh Baghdad hotel as the guest of the Iraqi Intelligence Service.

Less than two months before 9/11/01, the state-controlled Iraqi newspaper “Al-Nasiriya” carried a column headlined, “American, an Obsession called Osama Bin Ladin.” (July 21, 2001)

In the piece, Baath Party writer Naeem Abd Muhalhal predicted that bin Laden would attack the US “with the seriousness of the Bedouin of the desert about the way he will try to bomb the Pentagon after he destroys the White House.”

The same state-approved column also insisted that bin Laden “will strike America on the arm that is already hurting,” and that the US “will curse the memory of Frank Sinatra every time he hears his songs” – an apparent reference to the Sinatra classic, “New York, New York”.

Saddam's Terror Links March 24, 2008; Page A14

Five years on, few Iraq myths are as persistent as the notion that the Bush Administration invented a connection between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda. Yet a new Pentagon report suggests that Iraq's links to world-wide terror networks, including al Qaeda, were far more extensive than previously understood.

Naturally, it's getting little or no attention. Press accounts have been misleading or outright distortions, while the Bush Administration seems indifferent. Even John McCain has let the study's revelations float by. But that doesn't make the facts any less notable or true.[Saddam Hussein]

The redacted version of "Saddam and Terrorism" is the most definitive public assessment to date from the Harmony program, the trove of "exploitable" documents, audio and video records, and computer files captured in Iraq. On the basis of about 600,000 items, the report lays out Saddam's willingness to use terrorism against American and other international targets, as well as his larger state sponsorship of terror, which included harboring, training and equipping jihadis throughout the Middle East.

"The rise of Islamic fundamentalism in the region gave Saddam the opportunity to make terrorism, one of the few tools remaining in Saddam's 'coercion' toolbox, not only cost effective but a formal instrument of state power," the authors conclude. Throughout the 1990s, the Iraqi Intelligence Service (IIS) cooperated with Hamas; the Palestine Liberation Front, which maintained a Baghdad office; Force 17, Yasser Arafat's private army; and others. The IIS gave commando training for members of Egyptian Islamic Jihad, the organization that assassinated Anwar Sadat and whose "emir" was Ayman al-Zawahiri, who became Osama bin Laden's second-in-command when the group merged with al Qaeda in 1998.

At the very least the report should dispel the notion that outwardly "secular" Saddam would never consort with religious types like al Qaeda. A pan-Arab nationalist, Saddam viewed radical Islamists as potential allies, and they likewise. According to a 1993 memo, Saddam decided to "form a group to start hunting Americans present on Arab soil; especially Somalia," where al Qaeda was then working with warlords against U.S. humanitarian forces. Saddam also trained Sudanese fighters in Iraq.

The Pentagon report cites this as "a tactical example" of their cooperation. When Saddam "was ordering action in Somalia aimed at the American presence, Osama bin Laden was doing the same thing." Saddam took an interest in "far-flung terrorist groups . . . to locate any organization whose services he might use in the future." The Harmony documents "reveal that the regime was willing to co-opt or support organizations it knew to be part of al Qaeda -- as long as that organization's near-term goals supported Saddam's long-term version."

For 20 years, such "support" included using Fedayeen Saddam training camps to school terrorists, especially Palestinians but also non-Iraqis "directly associated" with al Qaeda, continuing up to the fall of Baghdad. Saddam also provided financial support and weapons, amounting to "a state-directed program of significant scale." In July 2001, the regime began patronizing a terror cartel in Bahrain calling itself the Army of Muhammad, which, according to an Iraqi memo, "is under the wings of bin Laden."

It's true that the Pentagon report found no "smoking gun," i.e., a direct connection on a joint Iraq-al Qaeda operation. Supposedly this vindicates the view that Iraq's liberation was launched on false premises. But the Administration was always cautious, with Colin Powell alleging merely a "sinister nexus" in his 2003 U.N. speech. If anything, sinister is an understatement. The main Iraq intelligence failure was over WMD, but the report indicates that the CIA also underestimated Saddam's ties to global terror cartels.

The Administration has always maintained that Iraq is just one front in the war on terror; and the report offers "evidence of logistical preparation for terrorist operations in other nations, including those in the West." In 2002, an IIS memo explained to Saddam that Iraqi embassies were stockpiling weapons, while many of the terrorists trained in Fedayeen camps were dispatched to London with counterfeit documents, where they circulated throughout Europe.

Around the same time, the IIS began to manufacture better improvised explosive devices "designed to be used in civilian areas," and the regime bureaucratized suicide operations, with local Baath Party leaders competing to provide recruits for Saddam as part of a "Martyrdom Project."

All of these are inconvenient facts for those who want to assert that somehow Saddam could have been easily contained and presented no threat to the U.S. The Harmony files buttress the case that the decision to oust Saddam was the right one -- which makes it all the more puzzling that the Bush Administration is mum. It isn't the first time the White House has ceded the Iraq debate to its opponents.

There are tons of Democrat quotes regarding Saddam’s danger to the U.S. and the rest of the world.

Democrats say they are the smartest people on Earth, and yet all those genius Democrat leaders were so easily fooled by "Dumbya" Bush, who they say was the stupidest president in history.
