I heard a strange sound as I was cleaning up a shed, and it was a hibernating bat. I need to move it. It is attached to the side of a sheet of OSB that I could carry to some other place. This is Ohio and its fairly cold. It is not heated where I found it. I could move it to another barn. I thought Ohio bats went south for the winter. Anyways, will it survive if I tote the sheet of OSB to a protected, but not heated, section of a barn? I could knock it off the board and take it to the hay loft where they live during the summer. I need advice.
I was bitten by a bat about 2 years ago and had to have shots. It sucked. For a while there, goth chics were looking real good to me.

They actually over winter bats at their facility. If they are too far away for you...their naturalists can advise you or help locate a facility.
Try not to disturb the bat until you contact them for help. With the big snowstorm coming...you might inadvertently kill it.
If you do call an animal shelter or one of those wildlife rescue places, DO NOT tell them your name or address and do not meet them to transfer over the bat. I made that mistake and nearly came to blows with the woman. I’m a woman and the worse I’ve ever done is rip another 3rd grader’s sleeve when she tried to steal our ball. But, yeah, I was ready to punch her lights out when the rescue witch went to grab a box an injured rabbit was in and told me by law she was to kill any injured animal.
I’d just leave the bat alone. He’s fine. You’re fine. So, leave each other alone.
I made several bat houses, and placed them at the edge of my property.
Everybody was happy.
I have 3, last count, in the ventilation slats in my detached garage. Hope they make it. It’s going to be down in the teens first of the week.
I’ve been thinking of putting up a bat house.
Call Billy and Ricky....
My daughter works at a rehab center in Columbus. Near you?
If so I’ll speak w/ her.
The link in #12 points to a Michigan-based help-site. Your call if it is a ping.
If you see them flying around a light at night, throw anything up in the air and they will dive towards it.
She was a witch, because that is not true.
I’ve had a bat house up for over a year now but no bats have moved in. Anything you can do to lure them in? I do see little brown bats all the time during the summer. Was given the bat house from Wild Birds Unltd, followed all the directions, etc. Anyhow, any ideas for the spring would be appreciated.
Pingaroo...
It can take up to two years for bats to utilize a bat house. Siting of the house is imperative. Also, bat houses work best if attached to a building of all things...and not to a tree.
They're known as Buckeyes and probably don't appreciate being called 'bats'.
They seemed to be very picky about the placement of the houses. That's why I put 8 houses up and then got rid of the ones they didn't like.
I spoke with OSU about the bats and they were no help. (Maybe they found out I was a Michigan grad)
I am sure that they view the house in terms of food source but I am an engineer not a biologist.
I would talk with the local bird food supplier. They seem to have their fingers on the pulse of the area.
I had three Baltimore Oriels and several Humming birds following their advice
Bats are big carrier of rabies, kill it...
Disgusting and depraved.
Thanks everyone. It looked like the only way the bat was going to survive was to spend the winter in my attic. I used some old tupperware to take him into the house and up to the attic. I didn’t touch it or breathe anything. Hopefully everything will turn out OK.
