New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Tuesday that the Yankees have made a "fair and appropriate" contract offer to Derek Jeter and suggested that if the 36-year-old shortstop thinks otherwise, he should shop himself around to find out.

Jeter's a great team leader and a very productive and consistent offensive player.

He'll also turn 37 before the next All Star Game, he is a decent but not exceptional defense player, and his offensive stats are starting to reflect his age.

Not too many 40 year old position players in baseball make $15 million a year.

True dat - I bet he makes it to The Hall, but even Paul Molitor became a DH (and I don’t see the Yanks giving him that spot).

Good, just so long as the Yankees don’t leverage their hugely unfair financial advantage in stealing Albert Pujols from my Cardinals.

If Jeter’s agent, Casey Close, is worth his salt, his first phone call will be to the Red Sox.

The Yanks will overpay to prevent Jeter from going to the hated Bosox. At the same time, the Sox know that a public courting of Jeter will send the Yankees’ brass into panic mode, inflate his price tag, and possibly reduce the amount of $$ the Yanks will be able to toss at other free agents.

Although, these are the Yanks, so budgetary constraints usually end up out the window when push comes to shove. (and, yes, I’m a Yankees fan)

Could be an interesting game of chicken!

That's playing with fire.

Jeter needs an untarnished legacy much more than he needs a 5-10% raise.

If he comes off as greedy and willing to betray the fans for extra cash, he could create a Favre-in-Green Bay situation for himself.

LOL..... as a Red Sox fan I’d be fine with that scenario so long as the Red Sox don’t make an actual offer for any ridiculous sum (which they won’t do - good heavens, they just let Victor Martinez go to the Tigers).

But tie up the Yankees, inflate Jeter’s eventual contract figures, sure, go for it!

The new rule among MLB General Managers is that you do not offer extended or high price contracts to any player over the age of 36.

In the old days players were paid a lot less, think Reggie Jackson under $1 million, and you could afford to keep a legacy player around for old time’s sake. Those days are gone. Most of the older guys are coming off huge, long term contracts and then they are just going to have to graduate into a series of one year contracts, and probably with a new team. What is unethical or unfair about this?

Cashman ought to say it like a Corleone:

"My offer is this: Nothing. Not even an incentive bonus for winning the World Series, which by your own words if you don't win then the entire season is a total and utter failure"

Jeter has a bulletproof endorsement franchise for the rest of his life if he stays in New York.

If he was really shrewd he’d accept the Yankees offer and donate half of his salary to charity. The favorable publicity would make him even more valuable to advertisers.

He'll end up staying in New York, but the New York Post recently had this as their backpage:

I'd laugh my patootie off.
