SAUGUS, Mass. -- A Saugus, Mass. family found themselves in the middle of a film fright.

What they thought was going to be a G-rated movie ended up being a gory horror flick.

Most parents try to keep a close eye on what their young children watch, making sure they don’t see anything too graphic.

But, parents and kids headed to the new animated movie “Megamind” left a movie theatre in Revere, Mass. shocked.

Children were at Showcase Cinemas to see aDreamworks cartoon in 3D, but instead they saw the horror movie Saw in 3D. Parents said when the previews came on they started to worry because the previews were a little advanced for children.

But they never expected the gore and violent horror film Saw. The children were told to cover their eyes in the scenes of murder and mutilation played for several minutes before the movie theater corrected the problem.

The movie, “Megamind,” was put on, but parents said the damage was already done and their children are still shaken by it.

“He came and slept with us and we thought we had gotten past that years ago. He said that he had a few nightmares,” said Dolph Rau, an upset father. “Again, all that I would like to see come out of this is that its not going to happen again.”

The children were given one free ticket as a result of the mix up. But the Rau family’s 7-year-old son told them that he does not want to see a movie again for a very long time.

Showcase cinemas told the family that it was a mistake. They have offered no further comment than that.

movie mixup for me: first showing of Born on the Fourth of July. Suddenly it turns into something about giant worms.
Turns out a reel of the forthcoming “Tremors” got mixed in.
Got refund (even more bizarre, one movie was 35mm the other
70 or 16mm or something, so it looked weird what with how
the projected was set...)

Cadillac Man: Film broke. Refund.

A midnight movie (maybe Rocky Horror): Power outage

So....the parents who were so upset remained in the theater when the incorrect film continued to play?

That must have been wild. Saw movies usually start off with a bloodbath right out of the gate.

Back in HS, I brought my then-GF to watch Gladiator and after 30 minutes of previews, it turned out to be Shaft with Samuel L Jackson. People started throwing popcorn at the screen. You cant move to the next cinema because they dont all start at the same time, so everyone was given refunds.

Nothing against Sam Jackson but I wanted to see Maximus.(well, my GF did too and she wanted to play Gladiator and slave that night, but anyhow..)

It’s pretty sad that our culture is ‘entertained’ by crap such as Saw. Movies used to be suitable for everyone.

Try having a child with you when you sit down expecting a G movie, but the movie opens to a girl with a sex toy, who begins to use it (some American Pie type movie). The difference is that I had the brains to quickly remove him in order to get the manager.

Haven’t you been to a movie theater lately? Especially Multi-Plexes?

They have “attendants” who roam the aisles with M-16s, making sure that NO ONE leaves the theater until the movie is finished (you can get a “Concession Pass” to get snacks so long as the total of the snack bill is no less than $70 — but your armed escort will ensure you return to your seat).

More of a social event than a cinema one.

That was sort of the point. ;) :)

Something similar has happened at many a TV station. There have been a few instances of a TV station accidently airing a porno film instead of the 10pm news (namely because someone in the booth was watching a porno and flipped the wrong switch).

No thanks. Let the kids have their movies and I'll keep mine. And I like mine bloody and R-rated.

Yes...

(...but why am I snickering, too ?)

Gee whiz, my father took me to see “Poltergeist” when I was about 8. My mother was not amused. Of course, I really wanted to see “Porky’s”... ;-D

Um... don’t want to rain on someone’s pity party... but it is the responsibility of the parents to haul their kids little butts out of the theater immediately upon seeing the very first sign of gore, violence, graphic sex, and anything else that might have tipped off anyone with an IQ above room temperature that something might be wrong.

The fact that some of the parents allowed their kids to sit through scenes of gore and mutilation for “several minutes” tells me that the parents in question are either missing legs, missing common sense, or missing in action.

And, yeah, the theater messed up. It happens. The reaction of the audience is the responsibility of those in the audience.

I’m really tired of people not taking responsibility for themselves, this case included. Sheesh.
