PITTSBURGH - A Pittsburgh man spent $20,000 to surprise his father with a Pontiac GTO he sold nearly 20 years ago.
Brian Laney said he wanted to purchase a GTO and was searching online five months ago when he spotted the vehicle his father purchased for $6,000 in 1970 and later sold, WTAE-TV, Pittsburgh, reported Tuesday.
Laney bought the car, which was being sold in Marina Del Ray, Calif., for $20,000 and surprised his father, Walter, with the discovery.
"I think it's great. It's just unbelievable after all these years, you know," said Walter Laney.
Brian Laney said it was "unbelievable" to have the car back.
"Couple little marks on it. Needs a little work yet, but it still looks real good for as long as it's been gone," he said.
1970 Pontiac GTO
I bought a '01 Ford Bullitt Mustang GT new... I'll never give her up. One down-side: I have to buy a lot of floss to help clear the rice out of her grill :-)
I always preferred the Bonneville 2+2..same great performance, and it had an awesomely big rear seat..(g)
My only "modification": windows tinted (to combat the TX heat).
This is a cool story.
It is an unwritten rule of life that your first car must be a beater, your second car is the one you wish you still had when you are 40.
My first car was a 1973 Chevy Vega. I leaked more oil than a BP well. I don’t know why they put an air conditioner on it but they did. If you were running the air and stopped at a stoplight, you had to put the car in neutral and give the engine some gas or the compressor would kill the engine. Back to the soil from whence you came, you dog of a car!
My second car was a 1972 Ford Mustang Mach 1, white with blue interior with a 351 Cleveland motor. That car would MOVE. And I intended to keep it when I got done with law school, but alas, I went to a Cub game on June 23, 1984. When I came back to my buddy’s apartment, it was GONE. I had to make a car theft report to Chicago PD after an extra-inning Cub game, and a stop across the street, if you know what I mean. (”You sure you parked your car here? All these streets look the same, you know.”)
You'da thunk he'da remembered to pull the front wheel chocks!

I have loved every car I have ever owned with one exception.
1. 1966 Chevy Caprice 396 V8 (I still have it)
2. 1975 Cadillac Coupe De Ville 500 ci V8 (I Loved that car. White with red leather interior
my Pimp Mobile)
3. 1979 Porsche 911 (Had a 450hp turbo in it. Only 4 gears. That thing would give you whiplash)
4. 1967 Corvette Stingray (Should have never sold this car but needed the money)
5. 1975 Ford F350 Super Cab pickup truck with a 460 V8. That was one tough truck
6. 1984 Ford Taurus (Bought it the day after Christmas when they first went on sale. Mistake)
7. 1996 Honda Del Sol vetch. That was a fun little 2 seater! Only had it for 11 months until some drunk plowed in to me
8. 1998 Ford Econoline Van Conversion with Triton V8 (Bullet Proof!)
9. 1994 Isuzu Amigo. Great little 4x4. Got hit in that one too.
10. 2003 Honda Accord. Great sedan
11. 2006 Honda Civic SI driving this one now. Great car. Fast too.
Second was a 1959 Studebaker Silver Hawk..
Second was a 1959 Studebaker Silver Hawk..
BTW..does the rule apply to 1rst and 2nd wives as well? LOL
Is there some way to trace cars by the name they were once registered in? My late father had some great cars when I was a kid in the 70’s in Texas and I would love to see if some of them were still on the road or for sale.
Could you please explain to me the function of sitting still burning rubber? My son was showing me videos of people doing it and the point was completely lost on me. He thought I was being deliberately stupid but my stupidity, if any, was completely unintentional. Am I right in concluding that this destroys one’s tires? Why would anyone do this?
My first car was a 57 chevy 202, 6 cylinder with a 3 speed on the floor (did it myself).
Bought it off a dealers back lot for $50.
Running.
1. 1969 Camaro
2. 1967 Bond Equipe 2+2 (UK)
3. 1968 Jaguar Mk II (UK)
4. 1978 Chevy Nova Police Package (this is the one I want back only as a 2 door coupe)
5. 1975 Jaguar XJ 3.4 (UK)
etc.
Fit and finish on that car was horrible out of factory. The things people will fall in love with.
I can still hear the windows inside the doors rattling as the doors are closed, still see the dashboard shaking when driving over bumps...and that rubber nose that was engineered with no hope of matching up to the sheet metal.
The other favorite trick we had..one of the guys had a Chrysler..big V-8 sedan..with the automatic tranny..had the stupid little shift buttons on the dash..so we'd put it ointo N, then rev the engine to the max, then hit D with the pinkey..BIG thud as the gears dropped in, then it would burn rubber..it was the 60's...
Kind of like the uselessness of arranging flowers. What is the point? A bouquet of flowers is supposed to be put in front of the rear wheels just before you mash the gas.
My favorite is the one I still have. 2001 Chevy Suburban, 3/4 ton, 4x4, snow plow package, Eaton locking differential, LT265/75/16 LRE, etc. etc... I factory ordered it with every little thing I liked and nothing I didn’t like. :)
I plan to keep it for towing until it blows up. It’s also the last Government Motors vehicle I will ever buy.
My ‘68 got scratch in 2nd (unintentionally) didn’t seem feasible to try it in a higher gear.
