Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S outsold its archrival the Apple iPhone in Japan last week.
According to a ranking by Japanese market researcher BCN, Samsung's flagship smartphone dethroned the 32GB iPhone 4 as the top-selling cell phone for the last week of October, its debut week there.
Apple, however, remained at the top when including sales of the 16GB iPhone 4, which took third place. The two iPhone models had occupied the top two spots on the ranking for 18 weeks since their release in Japan in June.
The Galaxy S was launched through Japan's largest mobile operator NTT Docomo. It runs Google's Android 2.2 operating system, an upgraded version of the Android 2.1 that powers the Galaxy S sold in the Korean market.

I have never been let down by a Samsung product. I’m sure this device is leagues better than the iphone 4 5 6 or whatever they have now to fix their aerial problems.
BTW the “Orientals” are gay little non stop chatterboxes. You walk down Asian city streets and they are chattering away at light speed on cell phones. Men and women alike. All tripping out on themselves. A major step forward for mankind — I am sure. I’m sure some business is conducted but 90% is inane
All this stuff on smartphones makes my head hurt. I can’t decide whther to get an Android, iPhone, or wait for the Windows phone. All I want is a reliable phone that is easy to use for text and web surfing, including video. I would also like one with a decent camera to take pictures of my baby granddaughter. There are advantages and disadvantages to each of them. My husband thinks I’m crazy to be in such agony over this decision.
Interesting. I see far more “I will never buy a Samsung phone again” posts. They are notoriously bad about supporting their products. The notable recent one is the Behold II which never got a software update once it came out despite Samsung saying it would. It took Samsung several months to get a software fix out for the GPS issue the AT&T and T-Mobile variants of the Galaxy S and it still isn’t great. The update to 2.2 is supposed to be coming this month for some International versions, but has no expected date in the US as far as I know.
iPhone then. It’s easier to use than Android, has arguably the best web browser, and takes better pictures than any other phone so far. For the record, I use an Android.
Thank you very much for your advice. The husband and both kids have them. I’ll be the first to have the i4.
That just might be true about Samsug as far as their smart phones..... I can just speak about other Samsung products I have that have not disappointed. I assume this competence extends to their smart phones
My wife has a Galaxy S phone. It has the best screen (IMO) on any phone including the new iPhone. It is fast and in general is a great phone.
However, the GPS does not work right. The Samsung fix did not correct it. My wife does not care but it would drive me crazy.
Must be why the iPhone is 70% of the Japanese smartphone market...
I leave it to you to decide which is the better display.
The good thing about the AMOLED display is that it uses relatively little power and looks better than most of the displays out there.
Obviously, Apple’s display leaves it in the dust. I’ve never seen anything that looked that clear, especially text. Finally, an LCD doesn’t really need anti-aliasing to make text not look pixellated (although Apple apparently still uses it).
I’ve held each in my own hands side by side and have looked at them with my own eyes. As I said, the Samsung screen looks better to me.
I checked out your link. Their conclusion: Wait for it:
Stick both at a normal distance away from the user, and it will likely come down to personal preference again.
Samsung claims it's good for watching HD movies... but the resolution 800 x 480 resolution of the Galaxy S cannot even begin to support the minimum 720 resolution of HD movies. It does offer a better contrast ratio... but it lacks brightness comparable to LEDs and washes out in sunlight much more than LED phones. So what you get in blackness, you lose in whiteness... a give and take. Almost half the resolution of the iPhone and less bright. To even approach the normal operating brightness of the iPhone, the AMOLED screen had to be turned up to full brightness which made it the equal in battery usage... of the half bright normal operating mode of the LED iPhone screen. Endgadget modified their review and photos to adjust when they found they could increase the Galaxy S's brightness...
Of course, even the iPhone’s res is not up to the 720... but at that screen size, it can’t be seen. However the pixels are far too small for the human eye to discern and HD is, after all, in the eye of the beholder. ;^)>
When I’m in the market for a smart phone I’ll get a Samsung. You know that Samsung is in the LCD business? They make them so of course their display will be superior to whatever the Taiwanese cook up for Apple to sell.
