Yuengling Expansion Could Bring Tourism, Wider Beer Distribution
Memphis Daily News ^ | October 2010 | Tom Wilemon

A brewery in Memphis will allow D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc. to introduce its beer to new markets in the South and Midwest, said David Casinelli, the company’s chief operating officer.

The Pottsville, Pa.-based company has signed a letter of intent to buy the former Coors brewery from Chism Hardy Enterprises LLC, but representatives of both parties are still negotiating the terms of a possible sale....

Although Yuengling is the nation’s oldest brewery, it currently sells beer in only 13 states. It has two breweries in Pennsylvania and one in Florida.

The Memphis facility would give Yuengling a foothold to expand into middle America, including highly populated states such as Illinois and Texas.

And, if it opens in Memphis, it also could bring tourism potential, as the brewery could eventually open for tours.

The 1 million-square-foot facility is larger than what Yuengling currently needs, but it would provide room for future growth, Casinelli said. He could not provide an estimate for the number of jobs....

The company bought a former Stroh Brewery Co. plant in Tampa about 10 years ago. About 65 people now work there.

“We started out very small,” he said. “Over time, we’ve grown that plant. Basically, our strategy is to do it within our means and continue to grow.”

Yuengling’s existing breweries are open for tours, and the company would look to make any Memphis facility a tourist attraction....

Yuengling was all my uncles and cousins bought back in the early 60’s. The brewery was a couple miles away, and a beer distributor just down the block. Good stuff.

Yeah, we can find Black & Tan, Lager, and Light Lager. I like them all, though I tend towards the light more these days. I like to have a Black & Tan, then switch to the light stuff if I’m having a couple more.

Great, flavorful beer compared to the typical Buds, Millers, Coors, and Michelobs.

Last tiem I was up in Ohio, you could not get Yuengling there.

I was in PA not too long ago and tried it for the first time. I must say that each of the following nights I was there I had 1 or 2. It’s pretty good stuff.

Yeah, I try to get some of the great lakes stuff when I’m in Cleveland. Last trip, I didn’t get any because I filled my cooler with Kielbasa and Pierogis. :-)

Had it for the first time this summer. If the stupid liquor laws in Oklahoma keep it from being sold here...well, I’ve always wanted to visit Memphis.

(1) There is no bad beer. It's in the Bible.

It is sort of ironic that the brewery they bought in Tampa was an old Stroh’s brewery. Now they are buying an old Stroh’s brewery in Memphis. Some rise, some fall.

IIRC I had a lager and what they call a “black and tan”...both were delicious.

So far, Yuengling is an East Coast brand. I’ve toured their Pottstown, PA brewery, and my wife loves their Chesterfield Ale. I’m not much of a beer drinker, but when I do, if I can get Yuengling Porter or Black and Tan, which is a blend of their porter and lager, it’s one of the few beers that I enjoy drinking.
