Book Review: Schwarzenegger’s presidential ambitions (Are they CRAZY?!)
The Washington Post's Political Bookworm ^ | October 8, 2010 | Steven E. Levingston

Is there anybody out there with muscle-man Republican-populist appeal who is bigger, meaner, tougher than the indestructible Sarah Palin? Anyone who could take her on – and take her down in a run for the presidency? It seems a job for only one person – a creature of titanic strength, a man who, once he sets his sights on something, does not unlock like some kind of weird cyborg, maybe. And that one man could only be the Governator, the Terminator: Arnold himself.

A new book due out next week reveals that Schwarzenegger hasn’t given up his hopes of parking his Hummer in the White House garage for four years, or more; in fact, he seems more intent on it than ever despite some setbacks: his popularity has waned with general voters and with the Republican establishment in his home state of California, and he still faces the he-man hurdle of amending the U.S. Constitution to enable his presidential ambitions.

No matter. As Ian Halperin writes in “The Governator: From Muscle Beach to His Quest for the White House, the Improbable Rise of Arnold Schwarzenegger,” the aging actor-politician does not plan to sit idly by after leaving the governorship in January 2011. Halperin relies on an unnamed Schwarzenegger aide and three other anonymous sources to detail a strategy now taking shape to stir up grassroots support for altering the Constitution to allow non-natives to pursue the presidency. After achieving that not insignificant goal, Halperin writes, Schwarzenegger has “devised a bold new strategy for his campaign to take the Oval Office” that includes a “run for office not as a Republican, not as a Democrat, but as an independent.”(continued)

He’s openly known to be foreign born. Can’t happen.

Besides he’s an effing RINO and he’s helped to drag CA down a financial well they probably won’t get out of without defaulting.

“So they’re planning on using Governor Schwarzenegger as a Ross Perot against Governor Palin in 2012? How do you think that’ll work for them?”

It won’t. Unlike bambi, Arnie has papers

What’s the problem? Arnold can just claim that he was actually born in Hawaii and call anyone who asks him to prove it a hater and a lunatic.

Schwarzenegger is nothing but weak.

Turned into a girlyman—the worst kind of RINO.

Schwarzenegger’s liberalism is not merely a price for personal gain but a preferred agenda.

Don’t forget the reference to “the Schwartzenegger amendment” in “Demolition Man”.

Arnold needs to go back to the gym and stay there.....Oh, and he should stick to the medicine ball, the Nautilus is too complex for his steroid-addled brain.

Possible if idiot states keep allowing crossover votes.

Not possible. You may not have to be a natural citizen anymore but you at least have to pretend to be!

Unlike with Obama there is no doubt where Arnie was born, Austria. No one is amending the constitution so one 1 jerk can run for President. Only in his dreams!

I would be disposed to support a constitutional amendment that allowed naturalized citizens to be eligible for the presidency if they’ve been U.S. citizens for 35 years (since they would have been U.S. citizens for as long as a 35-year-old natural-born citizen has been a U.S. citizen), but such an amendment would not be in my top 10 list of necessary constitutional amendments. Maybe it could be section 2 to an amendment that clarifies that persons born in the U.S. whose parents are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents shall not be deemed U.S. citizens at birth.

But Arnold Schwarzenegger could never become president even with such a constitutional amendment. The only naturalized citizen whom I can think of off the top of my head whom I would support for president or VP if such amendment was approved would be Congressman Peter Hoekstra of Michigan.

I tend to agree with your idea.

Hoekstra is from the motherland huh, I didn’t know that, or more likely did and forgot.

Unsurprisingly Arnold favors 25 years rather than 35. Can’t want to wait till 2020 (1983 + 35 2018) cause he knows at age 73 he and his running mate Megan McCain would be no match for me. ;)

Hoekstra was born in The Netherlands and emigrated to the U.S. with his parents when he was 4 years old (or maybe even younger), moving to the aptly named Holland, Michigan.

Other naturalized citizens who have been in Congress recently include the late Tom Lantos (Hungary), Lincoln Díaz-Balart and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (Cuba), Ciro Rodríguez (Mexico), Joe Cao (Vietnam), and Senator Mel Martínez (Cuba). And Arnold is not the only naturalized governor, since Jennifer Granholm of MI is Canadian (it’s a shame that Hoekstra lost the GOP gubernatorial primary, not just because he’s more conservative than Snyder, but he’d continue MI’s streak of having a governor who’s constitutionally ineligible to become president).

The Constitution will not be amended to allow idiot Arnold to run for President.

Won’t happen.

By all means, let the Terminator destroy America like he has destroyed California.

Ahhnold is no Republican. Not even a RINO.

No, Maria took care of that problem. I said that the moment he married her—I knew she would turn him.

As was said by a wag here on FR recently, it would have been much better for the world if Joe Kenndey, Sr. was sterile.
