Book Review: Schwarzenegger’s presidential ambitions (Are they CRAZY?!)
The Washington Post's Political Bookworm ^ | October 8, 2010 | Steven E. Levingston

Is there anybody out there with muscle-man Republican-populist appeal who is bigger, meaner, tougher than the indestructible Sarah Palin? Anyone who could take her on – and take her down in a run for the presidency? It seems a job for only one person – a creature of titanic strength, a man who, once he sets his sights on something, does not unlock like some kind of weird cyborg, maybe. And that one man could only be the Governator, the Terminator: Arnold himself.

A new book due out next week reveals that Schwarzenegger hasn’t given up his hopes of parking his Hummer in the White House garage for four years, or more; in fact, he seems more intent on it than ever despite some setbacks: his popularity has waned with general voters and with the Republican establishment in his home state of California, and he still faces the he-man hurdle of amending the U.S. Constitution to enable his presidential ambitions.

No matter. As Ian Halperin writes in “The Governator: From Muscle Beach to His Quest for the White House, the Improbable Rise of Arnold Schwarzenegger,” the aging actor-politician does not plan to sit idly by after leaving the governorship in January 2011. Halperin relies on an unnamed Schwarzenegger aide and three other anonymous sources to detail a strategy now taking shape to stir up grassroots support for altering the Constitution to allow non-natives to pursue the presidency. After achieving that not insignificant goal, Halperin writes, Schwarzenegger has “devised a bold new strategy for his campaign to take the Oval Office” that includes a “run for office not as a Republican, not as a Democrat, but as an independent.”(continued)

So they're planning on using Governor Schwarzenegger as a Ross Perot against Governor Palin in 2012? How do you think that'll work for them?

He should go back to doing movies. He still looks great. I could really enjoy True Lies 2 or even another Conan (if done right).

As a Repub...well, he kinda sucks.

I guess you don’t have to be a natural born citizen anymore.

There was once an Austrian who became the leader of another country, it didn’t work out quite so well...I think his name was ‘Schickelgruber’ or something like that.

The source says they plan to amend the Constitution to allow it. All he needs is 2/3 of both houses of Congress and a majority in 3/4’s of the state legislatures. It took Women’s Suffrage about 50 years to get through. How old is Arnold anyway?

Actually , If I was Arnold I would just run for President. If an attempt to block his campaign then he could sue on the grounds that since a non- natural born citizen has been allowed to be “President “ (obama), Article 2 of the Constitution no longer applies. The 14th Amendment allows equal protection under the laws, therefore Arnold has the right to be President. You can’t have it both ways, if obama is the legal President then Arnold can be the legal President also.

I have no particular objection to an amendment allowing naturalized citizens to become president. Perhaps with 20 or 25 years of American citizenship as a requirement.

But the lack of demand for such an amendment is very loud.

I have a supreme political challenge for Der Ahhnuuld ...

Go back to Austria. Assume the same role as General Monck did for Charles II of England.

That is, kingmaker for a Hapsburg restoration!

(Please pause at this point to locate a recording of the “Radetzky March.” Listen to it all the way through. Listen to it again.)

The Hapsburgs had their ups and downs over 500 years, but they ended up the longest-running act in European monarchy.
They would be going still if it hadn’t been for those upstart Hohenzollerns.

The Hapsburgs certainly knew what to do about their Muslim problem. Check out the Siege of Vienna in 1683, followed by Prinz Eugen’s many successful Balkan campaigns against the Turks.

My personal favorite was Zenta, 1697, which was your classic one-sided comeuppance for the the throat-slitting forces of the religion of evil.

For what it’s worth, I have come to believe that constitutional monarchy is the only answer for a rejuvenated Europe.

People are lost without their traditions. Should it be any wonder that the Left, in its ruthless search for power for power’s sake, seeks to smash family, church, civil society.

Devotion to a supra-national monarchy — of which the old “Ramshackle Empire” was the best example — is about the only way of counteracting Europe’s centuries-old ethnic hatreds. A beloved imperial father figure like Franz Josef stood above such tawdry business, lending stability to the nation.

Or to put it simply — American patriotism starts with our devotion to our Constitution; European patriotism starts with devotion to legitimate monarchies that embody centuries of tradition in the persons of a royal family that is above dirty partisan politics.
