"The Howards of Virginia" sounds like a real Freeper movie! How did I ever miss it when I was a young skull full of mush!
I have to agree with the reviewer....I really can't buy Cary Grant as a backwoodsman. I'll bet he never had a hair out of place or a burr sticking to his elegant trouserd!

"The Howards" is one of Mrs Mag's all time favorite movies. Grant has always been her favorite actor. Apparently you are treated to seeing rather more of Mr Grant than was customary in movies of this age.
Cary Grant wasn't insistant on being immaculate. Did you ever see "Father Goose"? He loved making that.

I loved “Father Goose.” It was a Saturday afternoon staple in the henkster household growing up. (Along with “Mysterious Island” “The Incredible Mr. Limpet” “The Great Race” “Forbidden Planet” “The Monolith Monsters” and of course any Godzilla movie).
Could you imagine Hollywood filming “The Howards of Virginia” today? Cary Grant would be oppressing the Native Americans while Martha Scott would be oppressing her black slaves. And then once the American bourgeoisie revolution had succeeded, the Howards would be oppressing the urban proletariat. Those would be the only messages of the film.

Sounds like your Saturday afternoons were like mine....double feature, news-of-the-day, cartoon, short subject, coming attractions, ushers with flashlights, Milk Duds, Holloway all-day suckers, 5-cent popcorn, and time to actually go to the loo, LOL.
All for 10-cents...and you could stay for another round of heaven if you wanted.
I was struck by the movie ads shown above. What an array of fabulous, enduring movies! What distinctive stars! What a film choice you could make between terrific, good, mediocre...and deliciously horrible.
If those years were the Golden Age of Hollywood, what would today's movie era be called....the Plastic Age of Hollywood, maybe?

"Father Goose" is one of my favorite Cary Grant movies, along with "Operation Petticoat" and "Mr Lucky." All of them are great "date flicks." There is enough action, adventure and/or humor to keep a guy from falling asleep in his seat as well as enough romance to keep his date awake.
They couldn't make another "Howards of Virginia," there is only one man alive who can trip Mrs Mag's trigger like Cary Grant did, and he is too busy posting to FR to make a movie. No, I don't mean Lazmataz.
Not that I have been offered any Hollywood contracts.

Substitute Manure for Plastic. Hollyweird can’t even come up with any original scripts, and that goes for the quality of actors these days, too.

I just remembered one other favorite: “Houseboat.” It features a new starlet opposite Grant named Sophia Loren.

If those years were the Golden Age of Hollywood, what would today's movie era be called....the Plastic Age of Hollywood, maybe? I believe "garbage" might be an appropriate word...
Allow me to make the correction.....
