Survivor: Nicaragua

Posted on 09/15/2010 2:53:14 PM PDT by EveningStar

I will be handling this thread on a temporary basis only, and as time and health permits. You people are used to - and deserve - more. Hopefully, someone more qualified will step up and take this over. :)

Wikipedia article

Survivor: Nicaragua is the 21st season of Survivor. It will moving to Wednesday nights this season. In fact, it begins tonight, September 15, 2010, 8/7c.

The theme this season will be Young vs Old. The players will include a former NFL coach (Jimmy Johnson) and an amputee triathlete champion (Kelly Bruno).

From Wikipedia:
Survivor host Jeff Probst, has also announced that the Hidden Immunity Idol will continue to be used in the game. However, as idols have been found too easily the past two seasons (most often by Russell Hantz), or as the show's producers have dubbed it, "The Russell Factor", the idol will be hidden differently. The clues to the idols' locations will be visual rather than written as in past seasons. In addition, the tribes will be vying for control of a new item, the Medallion of Power, that, when used, gives an advantage in a challenge, but is then transferred to the other tribe.

Let's meet the players.

Here are photos of the players.

Listed below are links to player profiles. They include a video clip of the player, which is, unfortunately preceded by a short - but annoying - ad.

My understanding is that they are on the jury. I don’t often hope I’m wrong, but this is one time I REALLY hope I’m wrong. Someone at a fan site has encouraged anyone attending the Reunion show to boo loud and long anytime NaOnka or Purple Kelly opens their mouths until they can’t take it anymore and walk off.

NaOnka was the most disgusting contestant I’ve ever seen, and that includes two seasons of Russell.

Yep. Because we had interesting, real people. The Tagi alliance was a stroke of brilliance that we knew was going to go south when they’d have to eat their own. Same with the first season of The Amazing Race. Now both of these shows, which were the USDA Prime of the Reality Show genre, have often been reduced to stunt casting. There were a couple of seasons of each where it appeared that 75% of the participants were “models/actors/actresses.” The good thing, is that they seem to be moving back to what made them good. (Although Burnett needs to stop the “twist” stuff.) And maybe I’m in the minority, but can we just dispense with the hidden immunity idol?

Typically, this challenge would be three teams of three, but I think when the ‘dream team’ tested out the challenge, they found the dummies to be too heavy to reasonably get it over the first obstacle with just three people, and decided a 4th would have to happen. From there it was probably a quick decision to put up a chair for Dan to sit in for that momentary but priceless shot of a big man in a much bigger chair.

I don't think the previous challenge’s effectiveness of sitting one out (and oddly rooting for the girls) played much of a part in the decision, as they had set this one up as a schoolyard pickem (so of course, the assumption would be that Dan would be sitting it out.)

While Dan in the big chair shot was funny, it added nothing to the game. I wished they'd shown the schoolyard pick ‘em. In past episodes, the pick ‘em was a flashing neon sign of alliances and who's who in the pecking order.

All I’ll say is if I were one of the final three and was facing the Jury’s questions at the final Tribal Council, as soon as NaOinka or Purple Kelly got up to ask their questions, I’d say, “I don’t feel that quitters have the right to question me about whether or not I deserve the million bucks. I refuse to answer any of your questions and I don’t want your vote.”

Yeah, it might cost me the win, but then again, it might be enough to sway the other jury members.

Dan in a small chair was a reference to Gulliver’s Travels, I think.

Yes, it was a plug for the movie but it didn’t add anything to the challenge.

I’ve been wondering if Hell’s Kitchen was somehow connected to the movie as this season’s opening sequence is of Gordon as Gulliver being tied down by the contestants who are the Lilliputians.

I want to see NaOnka get together with Osten Taylor (Survivor: Pearl Islands - see Jeff, some of us do remember the quitters) and make perfectly formed little quitter babies.

whew..my favorite to win made it...I thought he was a goner..so did he by looking at his face...

Fabio for the win...

I wonder if something said at Tribal changed someone’s vote.

They should have booted Chase long ago. He is in the best physical shape.

As a side note..Marty continues to be baffled. Love seeing his reaction shots.

Anyone know when the big scandal happened? Guess it wasn’t this week.

Oooh, Sash is such a sneaky one. Lies to everyone and smiles the whole time. The bigger his smile, the bigger the lie. Some contestants are fun to watch lying but this guy is just plain creepy. Ewwww, instead of handing Jeff the immunity necklace, Sash made Jeff take it off him. Lysol moment.

Ghetto gave Chase her immunity idol so he’s safe for another couple rounds unless he doesn’t use it at the right time. Yes, he did bring his A game to the challenge but then he nearly blew it on not taking Sash with him. But it all worked out so that’s fine. Glad Holly and Jane got to go. Holly deserved it and Jane needed some calories in her. It was a given Jane wasn’t going to the challenge because getting the key down would be more difficult with a short person as they’d have less control over the pole.

I can’t believe they are so focused on Jane winning if she gets to the final when Fabio is an equal threat. But of course, it was Marty who put the target on Jane’s back. If it was down to her and Fabio, it would be a close call.

Ha, Jeff called Ghetto and Kelly quitters!

I think Jane’s husband died recently and they’re afraid she’d get the sympathy vote.

The exact scandal has finally been revealed on a spoiler thread. You probably won’t know it unless you read the internet because I doubt it comes up in the finale. I will reveal it after the winner is announced. Basically, a player breaks the “rules” of the game.

I noticed Dan voted for Fabio..and he is supposedly in an alliance with him. Fabio is the only one that voted for Holly..and thus was clueless about what was going down.

No one ever talks about taking out Dan. I guess because they know he would never win.

Another rumor is that Probst is leaving for ABC . May be a bargaining chip.

I’m with you ... Fabio for the win! The dude isn’t as dumb as he’s let on but has been a hoot to watch. Why is Dan still there?? I know, he’d be the one to take to the end because he’s already rich, is weak and rarely participates in the challenges. I wonder if he’s paid for his spot on this show? You know, like the rich folks who pay to go into space.

I doubt Dan paid to get on the show. Jimmy Johnson tried to get on three times .

Watch the online episode at the end when the votes are being announced and look at Fabio’s face as he is figuring out who voted against him -his own alliance.

He is not as dumb as everyone makes him out to be. When he had trouble with the puzzle he kept looking over at Sash to try to figure it out instead of fumbling around on his own.

Clearly, he will need to win immunity challenges to stay in the game.

If you watch the hanging on to the rope challenge - he looked left and right and then dropped out. He is intentionally flying under the radar.

Ghetto stole his socks and continued to wear them. Some survivors would have never let that go and would have gone on and on and on about it...until the end.

Next week will be fun to watch.

I hope he shows up in an All Star game. It would be fun to watch his play versus someone like Russell - an all time Villain. Russell has the top three spot along with Johnny Fairplay and Ghetto.

Leaving would be a stupid move on Jeff’s part. It’s a great gig that he needs to ride out until the end.
