Typically, this challenge would be three teams of three, but I think when the ‘dream team’ tested out the challenge, they found the dummies to be too heavy to reasonably get it over the first obstacle with just three people, and decided a 4th would have to happen. From there it was probably a quick decision to put up a chair for Dan to sit in for that momentary but priceless shot of a big man in a much bigger chair.
I don't think the previous challenge’s effectiveness of sitting one out (and oddly rooting for the girls) played much of a part in the decision, as they had set this one up as a schoolyard pickem (so of course, the assumption would be that Dan would be sitting it out.)

While Dan in the big chair shot was funny, it added nothing to the game. I wished they'd shown the schoolyard pick ‘em. In past episodes, the pick ‘em was a flashing neon sign of alliances and who's who in the pecking order.
