A founding member of ELO has been killed in a freak accident when a giant hay bale rolled out of a field and landed on his van. Cellist Mike Edwards died instantly when the 50-stone cylindrical bale careered down a slope, flipped 15ft over a hedge and smashed on to the roof of his van. Mr Edwards, 62, was known for unconventional cello playing including plucking the strings with an orange or grapefruit and his bizarre customs which became a major ingredient of ELO, the Electric Light Orchestra.

Yes, you’re right. He was a character. I saw a lot of good music in LA in those times. And it was so cheap.

Miniature biography of ELO cellist Mike Edwards

I love their music. "Out of the Blue" is awesome.

God, how terrible. Prayers for his family.

I grew up with this band - it seemed like they were on the radio almost constantly. Two of their best songs (and most underrated) were Need Her Love and Mr. Blue Sky. I still like those tunes.

RIP.

"700 pounds rolling down a steep sloped farm embankment, then up a slight incline before the road and becomes airborn. The guy’s van driving along perfectly timed for the bale to land on top and crush it. Unreal."

Coincidence? I think not!

No argument about the regrets on the loss of a life, "No man is an island ..."

However the weirdness of the accident does set one to wondering about such weird deaths and so on. I remember when (and it may still be true) it was always good for a chuckle on a slow news day when word came that so-and-so had insured a body part with "Lloyds of London". Granted this was before their spectacular flame-out and was always a publicity stunt (I think that Jayne Mansfield insured her bust) but still there was a contract written.

Now think about an insurance contract written for indemnity against death from a rolling bale of hay while driving on a public road... Given that the actuaries set these policies on the basis of probability, would $5 / year be too much against a $million?

This sounds like something that would happen to a Spinal Tap drummer.

This is a terrible ending!

I know ME’s cello work like I know a Mockingbird call.

The muzak we play at work is ELO-heavy, so now I’ll be thinking about hay-balers everyday.... forever.
