WASHINGTON - The Rev. Al Sharpton says Glenn Beck and others have a right to rally in Washington, but they don't have a right to distort Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision.
Sharpton told reporters Friday that Beck and his supporters are holding an anti-government rally advocating for states' rights on Saturday. He says that goes against the message in King's famous "I Have a Dream Speech," in which the civil rights leader appealed to the federal government to ensure equality.
Beck's Restoring Honor rally will be held at the Lincoln Memorial, where King delivered his 1963 speech. Sharpton and others also plan a rally and march through the city to commemorate the anniversary of the speech.
Many D.C. Council members also gave Sharpton their support during the news conference at city hall.
What he really means is he does not want anyone distorting his distortion of MLK's vision.
EXACTLY !! I wonder how many folks will show up for Sharptons counter-rally??
Equality comes from God.
To the extent that MLK’s vision was progressive, then good.
King was a republican and you don’t speak for him sharpton
AMEN !! Praise God that the Government is not responsible for “giving” or “granting” us anything... How dare Sharpton suggest otherwise... Dr. KING knew what he was talking about... Sharpton is the distorter of Dr. King’s “I have a dream”...... all the “giving” that our Government has done has brought us to the brink of economic collapse... enough is enough..
Yes, I remember Al Sharpton marching with the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. Wasn’t he right next to Mitt Romney’s father?
On the video, Sharpton says it’s about “passing it on from generation to generation.”
I guess that means they aren’t willing to accept their achievements, and move on to a society that is more equal than they are would like to admit.
The race baiting huckster is in danger of losing revenue should that happen.
your post begged the question where was 9yr old Sharpton when Dr. King delivered his “I have a Dream” Speech in 1963... well according to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Sharpton
In 1963, Sharpton’s father left his wife to have a relationship with Sharpton’s half-sister. Ada Sharpton took a job as a maid, but her income was so low that the family qualified for welfare and had to move from middle class Hollis, Queens, to the public housing projects in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn.[14]
ping-a-ling... I hope the folks who REALLY understood and appreciated Dr. Kings speech go to Glen’s rally not Al’s
He’s going to have egg on his face. This rally is about returning to GOD! He thinks MLK would disagree with that premise? What a boob!
Wow.
...advocating for states’ rights ...
Wow
No, I think he was marching with zero’s dad. Remember, his mother and father were at Selma. That’s another lie he told in a speech. Not sure if this little gem is in his book or not, but, its simply not true.
David...you shouldn’t visit the sins of the father on the son.
However, in this case...;o)
Arrogant Bastid that one, Rev King is an American, not a hyphenated American, he was a Servant of the Lord first and foremost.
Neither “federal” nor “government” is anywhere in his speech.
Creepy father
that was not my intent.. I was just curious where Rev. Al was at the time of Dr. King’s speech.... raised both eyebrows when I read that on wiki
