LONGRIFLE KENNELS
self | July 25, 2010 | swampsniper

Posted on 07/25/2010 1:08:52 PM PDT by SWAMPSNIPER

I found this old shot from about 1990. It shows Longrifle Mountain Sunshine, Longrifle Abraham and Longrifle Beozle. Beozle was my original stud, out of the Omena Black Friday line. My dogs ran toward the upper size limit for AKC, deep chested long legged brush busters. They would hit the ground hunting and hunt 'til they dropped.

I used to take Sunshine with me when I hunted deer in Georgia. She would slow trail a deer, always seemed to know what I wanted her to do.

I was driving to Georgia with a friend one day, Sunshine was sitting between us. My friend said "rabbit" in a conversation and Sunshine went bonkers looking out the windows. He didn't realize what he'd done, LOL.

Then you just sit on the tailgate with a cup of coffee and wait until the music starts!

AW!!! What great looking dogs. I have a couple of mini dachshund scent hounds.

They do have the same reaction that Sunshine has to the word 'rabbit' - but their word is 'treats'!!!

Had a beagle when I was young...we used to get snow a little over his head...he used to go out in the driveway and sit up like a prairie dog just keeping his eye on his domain (when he wasn’t chasing something) I loved that dog...smart as hell.

I watched a Dachshund field trial once, the little guys will flat out run a rabbit, just sort of in slow motion. People forget that they were first bred to hunt Badgers. That takes a lot of guts!

Years ago there was an old man that lived near us that had maybe 2 dozen beagles. Sometimes he would take them all for a walk. None were on leashes. He carried a long horn and whenever any got too far away he gave a toot on the horn and they ran right back to him. I loved it when he came by our house.

Ruckus?

A pack in full cry is the most unearthly and beautiful music.

My dad and my uncle both raised Beagles and took me along on the hunts.

Even with a dozen dogs baying, you could pick out each unique voice and know who’d found the trail and who was following the lead dog.

Seeing one half of the pack come down off the ridge to join the other half who had found the rabbit was awesome.

*sigh*

Golden, wondrous days long past.

*** My friend said "rabbit" in a conversation and Sunshine went bonkers looking out the windows. He didn't realize what he'd done, LOL.***

:-) Our Yellow Lab does that with certain words too.

If we accidentally say 'Look' she runs to the Patio door 'looking' for another dog, rabbit or squirrel. And the same with 'Bunny' -- she ripped her toy rabbit apart and now keeps the skin to toss around -- but with that word she dashes to the Patio door looking for a 'Bunny'.

And she's never been hunting. She's afraid of almost every loud noise. Somehow the Breeder traumatized her during her 1st seven weeks. As she also hates trucks. The sight of the UPS and Fed-Ex Truck starts her barking like crazy. Mostly the UPS truck.

(If I knew where that Breeder was I'd kick his butt. Our youngest daughter got her as 'a surprise')

the more I see of man....

Ah yes- I can relate to that. But there are exceptions of man. There are good people out there- we just hear/know more about the ones that make animals, any animals, more precious.

That said, the loss of a pet or a working dog can be as much a loss as any one can imagine. I have been down that path.
