The battle of the sexes is sizzling this summer.
Elizabeth Karmel one of the few women in New York to helm a top grill pit rakes male cooks over the coals with her new The Girls Guide to Grilling (at stfsavortheflavor.com).
In it, she claims that women are just as good if not better at taming the outdoor flame.
The great thing about being a woman in the male-dominated world of grilling is that in the end, its all about the food, not about fire-building or pounding my fist on my chest, says Karmel, executive chef at Hill Country (30 W. 26th St.). I dont need to be macho, I just need the food to taste great.
She adds that women who try grilling her way will find that not only is the experience not messy, they can actually feel feminine while they do it.
I think everyone should look pretty while theyre grilling, she says. Because we all feel better about ourselves when we look pretty. She suggests wearing grilling mitts to protect long fingernails, and mitts to protect fingernails, and avoiding heels by a hot grill, preferring to go barefoot.
But her comments have sparked a war in the testosterone-fueled world of red-meat-cooking males.
Im not worried about getting dirty; I want flavor, says Andrew Fischel, owner of Rub BBQ (208 W. 23rd St.). If Im not getting smoky and getting greasy, than Im not cooking. Grilling outside is about getting smoke in your eyes and dirt under your fingernails all that great stuff. Thats why a lot of men gravitate towards grilling . . . the dirt, the smoke, its all part of the experience.

And check out Steven Raichlen on PBS He cooks on that monster Webber.
It looks to me that these chics are grilling. Anyone can grill.(Not a piece of meat on that ladys grill). But to get up early, start drinking at 10, and BBQ all day with wood and smoke, now that’s bbq.
You don’t sell those green eggs do you? Just connected your screen name to your post.
Hickory...??? Apple...???
That's just what you use if you can't find Mesquite.... :{)
Besides we **Yankees** prefer a slightly different technique for producing great summer fare....y'all are invited ...BYOB = BringYourOwnBib. ;-P
Then I'd color you uninformed. The Egg is made in the USA.
No knock on the Weber, I've had them, they do a good job ... and granted, the egg is pricey ... but I've worked long and hard in my life, having a few high quality toys I enjoy using is one of the perks of those efforts.
In this case, the wife surprised me with it to me on my last birthday. I cook on it 3-4 nights a week now.
On a side-note, it was only the second time in 31 years she's made a large purchase without asking - the the other time was my hunting rifle. No doubt about it, I married up.
I think it’s fair to say most women are glad to hand grilling over to men. Only trouble is too many men cook the food to death.
It may well be that women, who generally cook more, would on average be better at taking the food off before it’s shriveled up and dried out. Still, I think they put up with it in order to have the break. (”Oh, honey, you’re so masculine when you cook the dinner like that!”)
your losing me.
my two tiny Webers sit on my deck on an outdoor counter...I use one for the family (5 BIG people) and fire up both for when folks visit. they use a minimum of charcoal(your clay pot looks like it takes a lot of charcoal)...I use electric charcoal starters when home(and paper and chimneys when out campin').....my favorite is to slice a venison rump into steaks and marinade them for a few hours in Balsamic vinegar/oil dressing usually homemade but if too busy I buy OTC salad dressing and grill ‘em a little pink in the middle....delicious.
I learned to do the grilling at my house because my husband works very long hours during the summer.
I use a real charcoal Webber.
My female friends freak because there is actual FIRE involved...
which explains why there are more male than female grillers...
fear of FIRE.
“Men grill. Women make salad.” - Red Forman, “That 70’s Show”, to neighbor Bob’s aggressive new girlfriend.
My wife can cook chicken on the grill and it comes out great. I always seem to ruin it. Most other meats, I think I do better at though.
but it is a BBQ and I do charcoal grillin’ quick and rare to medium. If I ever get into real BBQ I will give it a try...(from their website:Derived from an ancient clay cooker called a “kamado,” the modern Big Green Egg has undergone many improvements since it was introduced in 1974 So I wuz right about it being Asian)
My wife wanted to buy a huge Propane grill for the deck...I said, fine, have fun using it. ‘NO!’ she said, ‘it would be for YOU to cook on’. Hell woman, you can use the range in the house if you want to cook on gas....I grill on charcoal...if you want an outdoor propane cooker have fun, I wish you the best using it...
ps:she wouldn't know what side of a rifle to put to her shoulder, so I buy my own ‘presents’ of the shooting variety.
Shut up and get me a beer! :)
I was of course grossly generalizing.
My brother, a former firefighter (those guys know smoke), has a smoker made from two metal bathtubs. The brisket and ribs he gets out of that thing are unrivaled.
Both of hers look good to me!
Most of my midweek cooking is grilling over hardwood lump charcoal. The usual fare is either thickcut pork chops or steaks, nice, big steaks:
From lighting the little firstarter squares to meat on the plate is under an hour. Actual cooktime for the meat is between 6 1/2 and 7 1/2 minutes. At between 650 and 700 degrees, it doesn't take long.
A pork roast in a Traeger BBQ with apple pellets, nothing better sorry. Mr. Lucky2 only lets me peek in the grill other than that it’s hands off!
That’s not grilling ,shes cooking in an oven (gas)
The only way to grill is with charcoal.(hickory or pecan )
I’d much rather watch her grill than some big beer bellied guy. Not guilty!
