Damn straight, George Strait! Texas boy!
Few decent songs (and I’m generally more of a rock guy anyway) but way overrated.
I thought it was the Eagles.
Maybe if corporate rock hadn’t gone country after Woodstock, country wouldn’t have gone more rock based...
How could there even be a question that it was anyone other than George?
Is Garth still performing?
“he’s the only artist in Billboard’s history to achieve top 10 singles in 30 consecutive years.”
He da man!
Garth = friend of Obama. I also swear he is a frirnd of Dorothy like Kenny Chesney.
Alison Krauss is the best, musically.
Billboard’s list:
1. George Strait
2. Garth Brooks
3. Reba McEntire
4. Alan Jackson
5. Tim McGraw
6. Randy Travis
7. Toby Keith
8. Kenny Chesney
9. Alabama
10. Brooks & Dunn
11. Rascal Flatts (really?)
12. Clint Black
13. Hank Williams Jr.
14. Shania Twain
15. The Judds
16. Faith Hill
17. Vince Gill
18. Dixie Chicks (would have been in the top 10 if they hadn’t spit on their fans)
19. Keith Urban
20. Brad Paisley
21. Ricky Van Shelton
22. Dwight Yoakam
23. Martina McBride
24. Travis Tritt
25. LeAnn Rimes
At the risk of sounding like a music snob, Nashville is too concerned with image and record sales for my tastes.
Straight is a fine artist, but I prefer the authentic (IMO) music of Buddy Miller, Thad Cockrell, Chris Gaffney (RIP), Scott Miller, Mike Ireland, Hayes Carll, Slaid Cleaves, Lee Ann Womack, among others.
Country music all sounds the same. Modern rock pretty much does too.
But Brooks left music in 2001 while Strait has stayed active. George is a sweeter more humble guy, but Brooks is sure a super entertainer.
If the writer really thought Garth Brooks was a more reasonable guess than George Strait, then she is not a fan of country music. George started earlier, hasnt retired, and had a cd of his 50 No 1 hits. Not 50 hits, but 50 hits that made it to No 1. George Strait has been the king of Nashville Country since the 80’s.
There is never just ‘one best’ imo because people have different music tastes.
YES!!! I am a Strait girl all the way. He is soooo HOT and talented!
Listen to this voice FReepers. Listen carefully! Alison Krauss won my heart 15 years ago, and never looked back.

George Strait, the King of Country Music. And Toby Kieth, The Knave.
I'm not even much of a country music fan, but there's something wrong with you if you don't like Johnny Cash. I'm a Nine Inch Nails fan, and Cash's rendition of Hurt just blew Reznor's original away. Reznor himself was overwhelmed by it.
It's hard to see how the same person made Shel Silverstein's A Boy Named Sue so entertaining, yet can make you break out in tears with Hurt. But that was Cash.
