CUPERTINO, California, May 18, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computers, says his company will not be a party to the pornography industry and hopes that the iPad and iPhone revolution will help lead to a porn-free world.
Jobs reiterated his position in a heated e-mail exchange with Ryan Tate, a writer for Gawker.com, which follows news and gossip in Silicon Valley and elsewhere. Tate, who admitted that he was home alone and slightly inebriated at the time, took issue with a television ad calling the iPad a revolution and fired off an e-mail to Jobs.
If Dylan [American songwriter Bob Dylan is one of Jobs favorite musicians] was 20 today, how would he feel about your company? Would he think the iPad had the faintest thing to do with revolution? Revolutions are about freedom, Tate wrote, not expecting a response from Jobs.
However, Jobs did respond to Tate, triggering an e-mail duel. Yep, freedom from programs that steal your private data. Freedom from programs that trash your battery. Freedom from porn. Yep, freedom, responded Jobs. The times they are a changin, and some traditional PC folks feel like their world is slipping away. It is.
However, Tate accused Jobs of "imposing" his "morality" by having Apple forbid pornographic applications for iPad. I dont want freedom from porn. Porn is just fine! And I think my wife would agree, fired back Tate - who later said he regretted mentioning his wife.
Jobs shot back, You might care more about porn when you have kids.

Why apologize? Jobs did some good work, succeeded in an area that I once worked in but didn't succeed in and you'll have to pry my MacBook Pro out of my cold dead hands. It's not like I respect him as a role model, hero or anything like that. That's reserved for true heroes like Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie and Brian Kernighan.
I am absolutely not interested in Microsoft Windows and that has nothing to do with my personal distaste for ultra-liberal whacko Gates and underarm stains Ballmer, nor should it.
I don't find any of Jobs, Gates or Ballmer appealing. It just doesn't matter. The work speaks for itself.
If I own a string of movie theaters, should I be castigated for showing only G rated movies? According to your thesis, yes.
But, in reality, you have misstated Jobs position. He is not allowing porn apps to be sold by Apple. The iPad is able to access any website, so you can look at all the sluts you wish (or maybe it's just the guys...).
Ignorance can be cured. Stupid can't.
Freedom means I can make a three legged stool, or a four legged chair, but it doesn't require me to make a table.
Yeah, because teens aren't using their iPhones to sext with one another... < /sarc >
iPhone apps aren’t “free market”. It’s all controlled by the parent company.
I think it was just a .wmv if I remember correctly...point is I sent that to all my PC users and she was the only one who couldn't open it on a Mac even though an employee of an Apple store...
LOL! :o)
“He is a fascist “
My local video store does not rent X or NC17 movies. They are fascists.
“Children’s Place” where I get most of my kids’ clothes don’t sell hot pants and push up bras for the kids. They are fascists.
My local bakery doesn’t offer cakes in the shape of genitals. I have to go all the way downtown to get one! My local baker is fascist!
The art gallery my uncle owns shows no nude paintings. He won’t hang those. He is a fascist.
I get my CDs frequently from an online music provider that doesn’t sell songs with explicit lyrics. They are fascists.
>I dont need porn because I have an incredibly hot wife and a libido that doesnt quit. Besides, if all that fails, Steve Jobs cant stop my active and vivid imagination.

Good for u. My canadian GF is smokin’ hot too and dont exactly need the stimulation when she’s beside me. Sure I subscribe to Maxim, if that passes for porn nowadays..
See?! You’re living in a fascist state and DIDN’T EVEN KNOW IT!!! WAKE UP, MAN!!!! /extremesarcasm
I ain’t exactly an Apple evangelist (I do own a couple of iPods), but I am with Steve Jobs on this one. Porn is destructive to society, and he has the right to make his own product in a way that doesn’t support it.
Excuse me. Only governments are fascist. It's Steve's company, and if he chooses not to allow porn to be viewed in his products, more power to him.
Here I am agreeing with Steve Jobs. I guess he’s about as tired as I am of getting 20 emails each day with the subject line: “Add 3+ inches!” People who send that stuff have a special place in Hell reserved just for them.
I think you responded to the wrong person. The quote you have in italics and are responding to, was written by someone else.
I don’t applaud a communist who does what I think is right for the wrong reasons. I don’t applaud a rapist for not raping because he determines that day it’s too inconvenient to do so. I don’t say “good job” to the robber who doesn’t rob one day because he’s too tired.
Steve Jobs has always been a proprietary bitch of a guy, something that has been a very damaging thing to Apple and has held that company back from sales. He’s also been stubborn to a fault refusing to allow superior models and technology out there because of his massive ego and personality clashes to the point they kicked him out for years. His ego is even bigger now. And I question all his judgment ability - you have to when a guy like this thought Algore should run in 08 and that “he’d win” if he ran.
>>Are you that thick, or do you just pretend on FR?<<
No, but I can see who is (hint: mirror time).
>>If I own a string of movie theaters, should I be castigated for showing only G rated movies? According to your thesis, yes.<<
Straw man argument. A theater is not an Internet access device.
>>But, in reality, you have misstated Jobs position. He is not allowing porn apps to be sold by Apple. The iPad is able to access any website, so you can look at all the sluts you wish (or maybe it’s just the guys...).<<
Apps are the way the iPad sees the world. Again, you use your favorite straw man argument. But that is not unexpected. BTW, thanks for showing everyone what a moron you are by misstating my position. Reading is fundamental — try it some day.
>>Ignorance can be cured. Stupid can’t.<<
True, so you have a 50/50 chance.
>>Freedom means I can make a three legged stool, or a four legged chair, but it doesn’t require me to make a table.<<
And a theater isn’t an access device. Repeating a fallacy doesn’t make it an argument — it just repeats the fallacy.
>>It’s always funny but a little sad when libertarians throw their hallowed ideals under the bus for their petty vices. In this case the free market principle that businesses and people should be allowed to decide not to participate in legal commerce with whom they choose. They will viciously try to destroy anything, including their own ideology, that might undermine the three cardinal perversions of libertarianism: drugs, porn, and prostitution. This politically self-destructive tendency of putting their depravity above their integrity always exposes them as the children and addicts they so often are.<<
It is even funnier when so-called conservatives use inapplicable ad hominem invective to make a meaningless and vapid point supporting their desire for tyranny. I am LMAO.
Does the iPad support WiFi and Internet browsing? Then it supports porn.
What am I missing?
Apple’s free to create a porn-free product and we’re free not to buy it.
An internet access device is not usually made of straw... and internet access is a function, not an app. Safari is the browser on the iPad. Apps allow function. Your ignorance could be excused, but you are wallowing in it.
... and your puerile distortions are just like your invectives, feeble. You'll not be cured, for sure! My reference to thick must have just covered your neck...
If you are that desperate for porn, try Craigslist. I understand there are some good S&M providers. This company has only the shareholders and customers to be concerned. If you are neither, then you can go back to your xbox.
Probably why Apple does better in the laptop market than desktop. Giving up easy upgrades is a general mark against laptops and not just Apple. Laptops are also probably more in with young people.
Not that I think Apples are limited to only young people, both of my parents have Macs for instance.
