CUPERTINO, California, May 18, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computers, says his company will not be a party to the pornography industry and hopes that the iPad and iPhone revolution will help lead to a porn-free world.
Jobs reiterated his position in a heated e-mail exchange with Ryan Tate, a writer for Gawker.com, which follows news and gossip in Silicon Valley and elsewhere. Tate, who admitted that he was home alone and slightly inebriated at the time, took issue with a television ad calling the iPad a revolution and fired off an e-mail to Jobs.
If Dylan [American songwriter Bob Dylan is one of Jobs favorite musicians] was 20 today, how would he feel about your company? Would he think the iPad had the faintest thing to do with revolution? Revolutions are about freedom, Tate wrote, not expecting a response from Jobs.
However, Jobs did respond to Tate, triggering an e-mail duel. Yep, freedom from programs that steal your private data. Freedom from programs that trash your battery. Freedom from porn. Yep, freedom, responded Jobs. The times they are a changin, and some traditional PC folks feel like their world is slipping away. It is.
However, Tate accused Jobs of "imposing" his "morality" by having Apple forbid pornographic applications for iPad. I dont want freedom from porn. Porn is just fine! And I think my wife would agree, fired back Tate - who later said he regretted mentioning his wife.
Jobs shot back, You might care more about porn when you have kids.

I agree about mystery novels.
I enjoy the Kay Scarpetta character but they’re laden with her affairs and her FBI agent niece’s homosexuality, which I really don’t like reading about in a damn mystery novel!
There’s also a good detective series starring a character named Alex Delwaare, but his partner is a homosexual, and again...I am an old-fashioned sort that doesn’t like book whose protagonists are homosexuals.

One of my friends has an iPhone. I noticed how he was swearing about bugs :-) The UI is nice, but I like my current phone better. If I ever decide to buy a brick it will be an Android phone; I have the free SDK already for my Vista laptop, and I built an app, and it works in the simulator. What else is there to wish for?
There are many niche needs for small, simple, free apps, but you can't easily make those for the iPhone because you need to become an official developer - this is not for random weekend coding. So if you ever need such a small, niche program, you are far more likely to find it on Android, overlaid on Google Maps, rather than on an iPhone. Another reason for that is that most developers know Java and don't know Objective C, and Android is coded in Java. The barrier of entry is lower with the OS from Google. And it's based on Linux, which is always a plus :-)
Like, for example, an infantry IFF app on a secure field-deployed 4G network in Afghanistan. I somehow doubt that Apple will ever produce a ruggedized iPhone capable of surviving combat operations.
You want the liberal Supreme Court to force porn on everyone? They already did that.
Romance novels are full of homosexuality.
I'm not quite understanding what Steve Jobs’ political views have to do with his decision to not be a pawn in the billion dollar ‘use other peoples’ daughters for their own gratification’ industry. Where is the freedom for the women being used? Never heard of anyone getting arrested for having iphone apps on their computer.
Not only is that a blessing, but I understand I things have NO sharp edges and it’s quite safe to run with one in your hand.
Enuch.
If your God approves of such a thing I wish nothing to do with It-Him.
Ex Jimmuh Carter voter I'd wager?
So, he is eradicating sin in the world? Wow. What a great gig.
What's next - is he going to die on a cross and save us?
That's already been done, by Christ.
He can't eliminate something like pornography. You can only change hearts through God.
He should stop pretending he is one.
Really? What format was it?
Just an observation, but look for everyone to praise Jobs’ decision to the skies, shouting that he’s a much-needed moral crusader; then look for these products to take a serious dip in sales.
Bet the farm.
Jobs underestimates the quick innovation of the online porn industry.
Guess he doesn’t want the SEC’s business then.
Good on ya, Steve. Go for it.
Way to go Jobs! A businessman with morality.
KUDOs for taking a stand for his beliefs.
Another reason I like Apple!
For those who don’t agree, stick with PCs and their problems.
Who defines porn? What other categories of media will Apple censor?
And that's the number one objection I have. It reminds me of a Keith Laumer Retief novel where Retief gets arrested on charges including "possessing racy pictures of unfertilized ova." What constitutes pornography very much depends on the eye of the beholder.
Pornography isn't very good, but it's better than the alternative of censorship.
Given a choice between viewing pictures of hot women and watching movies with a lot of violence, I'd prefer my son doing the former not the latter, though it would be better if he were doing something more useful like hacking software on an Open Source project - "No TV for you until you finish coding the feature in foo.el that I asked you to code" or something like that.
Police your own kids. Keep your flash-bang no-knock raids to your own house, not mine, thank you.
Um...Steve...it ain’t your call bro. And I’m not a porn guy...but this stuff screams Nazi.
I’m more libertarian on these types of things, I guess.
