A Round Lake Park woman was held in contempt and jailed for two days for the message on her T-shirt.
The message was: "I own the (female body part), so I make the rules."
Jennifer LaPenta, 19, was released from the Lake County Jail Tuesday.
"They should be out looking for people who are breaking the law, not arresting someone wearing a T-shirt," LaPenta said.
Associate Judge Helen Rozenburg charged LaPenta with contempt of court for wearing the garment in her courtroom Monday. LaPenta was sitting in the gallery waiting for a friend's case to be called when the judge called her forward.
Rozenburg asked LaPenta if she thought her shirt was appropriate.
LaPenta said she told the judge that it would have been inaprorpriate had she been the defendant.
Rozenburg immediately sentenced her to 48 hours in jail and had her cuffed, LaPenta said.
LaPenta contends that she never went to bond court or got to call her mother.
"They just threw me in jail. They never told me what I was going to jail for," LaPenta said.
LaPenta said that she had been at a gym Monday when her friend asked her for a ride to the courthouse. She was wearing sweat pants and that T-shirt when she was cuffed and jailed.
"All the officers thought it was hilarious -- it was humiliating," LaPenta said.
LaPenta said she bought the shirt in the gay section of Spencer's. She said she is openly homosexual and said the judge was a "homophobe" for putting her in custody for wearing the shirt.

Weird news alert. [Shouldn’t be weird, but ... ]
There’s a gay section at Spencer’s Gifts? That’s queer.
Master of my own domain!
Looks like a Lesbian to me.
Doesn’t her partner also own her own female body part, so...who makes the rules again?
The judge should have kicked her out of the courtroom - not jailed her.
I can’t believe what a police state we’re becoming.
Your reaction here doesn’t surprise me. You like the police state.
So how long do you think she should be jailed for wearing innappropriate attire in a courtroom?
It probably was but the judge should've just tossed her out without giving her the opportunity to shoot off her mouth. The shirt was inappropriate courtroom attire, period. No explanation needed.
Oh well. Hopefully the young woman had a valuable learning experience from all this.
I agree, except that a fine would also be appropriate. But there are better uses of jail cells.
Something besides the shirt most likely alerted the court to this girl. Try not to believe every statement of 'fact' by every one-sided article you read.
Control of a court room is of the utmost importance or else credibility is lost.
If that is the case, then I can see jail time if she were actually disrupting in some way.
And I hope that is the case because being jailed for wearing inappropriate attire in a courtroom is frightening.
What a classy 19 year old, I bet her Mom is proud of her.
By the way I went to my Grand daughters First Communion Sunday and after the kids made their first communion, the rest of the church went to get their communion, and up walks this girl about 17 with short shorts on and a T shirt that said Bitch across the front. I dont know where parents are when they see these things and are too stupid to tell their kids how ignorant that looks.
I remember seeing a hells-angel type wearing a black tee shirt at a Flea Market in Ventura, California way back in the 1970’s. The white letters on the black tee shirt spelled, “FU*K OFF.” Except there was a “C” instead of an asterik.
I pointed the T-shirt out to my father, and my Dad said, “That’s what he IS!”
that photo comes in handy sooooo often
Agreed.
