EMP could leave '9 out of 10 Americans dead'
WorldNetDaily ^ | May 3, 2010 | Joseph Farah

There is renewed alarm about the possibility of an EMP attack – electromagnetic pulse – on the United States because of Iran's work on a multi-stage Space Launch Vehicle, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

And experts forecast if such an attack were a success, it effectively could throw the U.S. back into an age of agriculture.

"Within a year of that attack, nine out of 10 Americans would be dead, because we can't support a population of the present size in urban centers and the like without electricity," said Frank Gaffney, president of the Center for Security Policy. "And that is exactly what I believe the Iranians are working towards."

A recent launch of an SLV by Iran has sparked renewed concern of an attack that could send an electromagnetic pulse powerful enough to wipe out computer controls for systems on which society has come to rely, officials say.

As the G2 Bulletin reported last week, Ronald Burgess, director of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, revealed that Iran successfully launched a multi-stage SLV, the Simorgh. The device ultimately could be equipped with a nuclear bomb, which the U.S. intelligence community assesses Iran is developing.

Officials also report Iran has been testing detonation of its nuclear-capable missiles by remote control while still in high-altitude flight...

What may be true of the city seldom translates to the country very well.

The devastation is predicated on the inability for urban dwellers to survive without electricity, etc.

While young children and the elderly would likely be first to perish, esp. in the southern US summers, those of us who are prepared would likely be just fine hunting and gathering to survive. I’ve honed my skills thanks to Boy Scouts and various survival courses I’ve taken, and I’m sure I could survive for at least a year without electricity or any commercial entity.

Anyone that wants to get an idea of life after an EMP attack should read ONE SECOND AFTER by WILLIAM R. FORSTCHEN.

And if that isn’t enough to get you heading to COSTCO for some canned food try PATRIOTS by JAMES WESLEY RAWLES or maybe LUCIFER’S HAMMER by Larry Niven and David Pournelle.

Yeah, guess there will now be a premium on old pre-solid state ignition vehicles. I know where there’s a 1954 Willys for sale, think I’ll go buy it before the word gets out. I’m good on the food side though, just planted two topsey turveys and already have one tomato....

...actually, saying 10% survive is on the high side. Back 200 years ago (where we end up) we had horses and horse-drawn plows...along with the survival skills needed for that time. Now we’ll have Nintendo’s that don’t work, and Facebook being down...not a chance.

In actuality, people will simply kill each other without asking questions, in order to get to whatever supplies exist. It will be kind of a grand-scale elimination match.

The best thing that can happen is a limited attack in some part of the country...that snaps the rest of the country to attention, so that Palin uses whatever nukes Obama leaves her with to take out the easy targets of North Korea and Iran. Let’s hope for this outcome, because we don’t want to be around for the other outcome.

Also, reminds me of the great show “Connections” where they talk about what would you do if suddenly there were no power, and all of the great inventions over the past thousands of years were rendered useless. Very sobering.

I'm reading it now.

I suspect the people who will die first are the ones who need life supporting medications like 'insulin'.

The biggest problem (for the cities, anyway) is fresh water. Being effectively "locked" into an urban area with no clear direction on where to get clean water once the bottles run out means within the first two weeks, you're looking at a staggering death toll.

Houses aren’t built nowadays with cross ventilation and high ceilings in mind for summers without AC. In the south, those in the newer homes will not survive.

I think you would see a pretty lopsided survival rate. Well under 50% in the city opposed to upwards of 70% in rural America.

I really never gave EMP much thought until reading ONE SECOND AFTER, by William R. Forstchen.

It is a chilling book. Written as a fiction novel, it does ecapsulate very well what it would be like in the months following. Newt Ginrich writes the forward in the book, and he is also seen on the link talking about the book, and it’s warning to us all.

Some of the Reviews

“The only thing more terrifying than this masterfully crafted story is the possibility of it actually happening—and not a damn thing being done to protect us.”

“A blood-chilling wake-up call that chaos and death are but a power plug away...Stock up on food, water, medicine, and batteries now. This horror could happen tomorrow.”

Boston had a major water main break over the weekend. Two million people had to boil their water before drinking it. That's pretty simple, really.

But there were fights in stores over bottled water. Some people seemed to lack the ability to one town over to a location that still had potable tap water. I heard people on the radio who seemed to be waiting for government trucks to come down the street, handing out supplies -- you know, like they did in Katrina.

Just boil the water! Sheesh!

A large segment of our society lacks any ability to take care of itself.

We had our 1962 truck up for sale. I talked my husband into keeping it, just in case. Especially after I did some research for Political Science class about the after effects of an EMP.

Yawn, not this crap again. Yes EMP is an issue but not the doomsday weapon. Ask yourself with all the nuclear testing that went on for years why didn’t stop the world? The Soviets did above ground and high altitude tests, we did above ground tests and not planes crashed etc.
