Fellow FReepers, I have just been told that my Grandpa is breathing his last breaths on this Earth. Everyone must pass, but what makes this one tough is that he was my own personal WWII hero. His name is John and on his first bomber mission over Germany in WWII, he was shot down and was a POW in Stalag 17B for the rest of the war. He had one of his hands smashed by a German rifle butt, he had some teeth kicked out by German Army boots, and he suffered severe frost bite on his lower legs. He was an easy target because he was 6'3". His job was being a gunner on a B-17. He lived a good Catholic life with no complaints.
You and your Grandpa John have my prayers.
He and your family are in my prayers.

Thank him for what he did for many people who will never know the particulars. Some of us, many of us, would not even exist to enjoy freedom if it were not for what he did, endured, and triumphed. Time for a worthy reward. Prayers and Thanks.

I can’t even find words to express the gratitude and love that we feel for this man. I hope our prayers will ease the way for him and for those who love him.
You have my deepest sympathies. Your grandfather gave meaning to the phrase “the Greatest Generation.” These were people who were willing to work, suffer and risk their lives to protect and defend us. May your grandfather rest with the Risen Lord.
Thank you for sharing your Grandfather’s story. He is now a hero to all of us. His bravery and the sacrifices he made for our freedom will never be forgotten.
