So long, nerds! Syfy doesn’t need you
MSNBC ^ | April 27, 2010 | Ree Hines

...Ultimately “SmackDown” marks the devolving of the network for a sweet, sweet slice of that 18-to-34 male demographic that sponsors love so much. That means money...

After all, the problem isn’t simply Syfy’s addition of wrestling to its lineup. The network inexplicably welcomed wrestling years ago with “Extreme Championship Wrestling” and more recently with “WWE NXT,” but bringing the bigger budget “Friday Night SmackDown” to the schedule marks a shift in priorities...

The other day I was 15 minutes into UFC when I realized it wasn’t Part II of that night’s episode of “Sanctuary.”

Most of their movies are already an insult to the intelligence of SciFi fans. Mega Shark, Meka Parahana, Uber Goldfish.. all pure camp.

I thought rasslin' was on Skippy Spike.

SyFy is losing its punch. I like Eureka - no word on its return. Watching Firefly for the first time (on Blu-Ray).

Enjoyed BSG, but couldn't get over the fact that though the cylons destroyed all but 35,000 humans, they still called the humans violent and blamed the humans for all that was bad.

I am enjoying Jusitified on FX, though.

Sci-Fi blew it a long time ago. Stargate Universe, Sci-Fi’s version of “As the Stomach Churns, the Outer Space version”. BLECH!

I thought "FrankenFish" was pretty entertaining camp.

BBC is actually doing better producing SciFi.

Hubby and I used to watch SyFy all the time. (Okay, I admit, it was mostly him, but I’d stay in the room when it was something I was at least able to stomach.) We hardly watch it any more. It’s gotten terribly cheesy.

*sigh* - Just like Hollywood; the last really good Science Fiction Movie that came out that springs readily to mind is Serenity.

Iron Man was really good, and you might consider it Sci-Fi-ish... but I’m classifying comic-book movies on their own.

Star Trek was ‘alright’ there are things that I really didn’t like though: Why would a ‘mining ship’ have weapons? Much less ones that could destroy, with ease, the “state of the art” semi-warships of a hundred or so years in the past. And, well, Star Trek REALLY screwed up the Romulans... with “Nemesis’s” ‘Remans’ being both slaves AND the empire’s infantry (”Yeah, let’s give our slaves weapons!!”) was REALLY dumb. The Romulans were great in TOS (Balance of Terror is one of my favorite episodes); in TNG and DS9 they were similarly good. But in Nemesis, Enterprise, and this new Star Trek they suck.

Agreed, and I can prove it in two words: Doctor Who.

I’m not even sure who makes movies like this. I saw better sci-fi and better special effects watching black and white movies from the 1950’s when I was a kid.

Hollywood SUCKS!

I don't know. Say, let's ask any ship in Nigerian waters!

Much less ones that could destroy, with ease, the “state of the art” semi-warships of a hundred or so years in the past.

Take a ship from the 1940s. Put it against a ship of the 1840s. Simple defensive weapons would crush it.

Take a ship from 2010. Put it against a ship from 1910. Simple defensive weapons would crush it.

The only thing I cared about was BSG and Caprica (barely).

Sy-fy might as well become Spike TV 8: the Ocho.

Well, the bad CGI and cheesy monster effects couldn’t go on forever. But these will be sad times for Steve Guttenberg.

Eureka comes back July 9th according to the last schedule I saw. Although that’s a Friday so maybe not.

Eureka is in production now, if I recall correctly. However, this will be the last season.
