Apple Inc. said Monday it sold more than 300,000 iPads in the U.S., including preorders, on the first day the device was available.
The company didn't give a precise figure, but the tally was below the estimates of some analysts.
Buyers flocked to stores starting Saturday after weeks of publicity about the tablet-style computer.
Apple hadn't offered iPad sales forecasts, but over the weekend, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster more than doubled his initial first-day sales estimate to between 600,000 and 700,000 units, including preorders, based on longer-than-expected lines at stores and high expectations for online preorders. He had also lifted his 2010 forecast to 5.5 million units from 2.8 million.

The model with 3G connectivity isn’t out yet. You can buy one with just wireless. If you choose to use 3G it is no contract, you can buy for a month at a time or a set amount of data.
As for wireless internet more and more places are giving it away for free, bookstores, restaurants, bars and so on.
Silly me, I let myself get caught up explaining Apple's chosen (mid-to-high-end) market segment again. Oh, when will I ever learn...???
People who want Apple products for cheap aren't interested in being told, "No, that's not what Apple does". They want Apple products for cheap. *sigh*... Silly me.
I'm outta here.... :)
I guess the device stands on its own merits then. Maybe I’m just jealous, but I don’t mind being wedded to a clunky old desktop to access the Internet. Funny how we’re having all of this freedom in communication even as other freedoms are eroding away. I can email somebody on the other side of the planet, but I won’t be able to buy an incandescent bulb.
Cheaper than an iMac, yes. You can get laptop PC from Dell or HP for $350 to $500.
We went out to eat for the first time in months (kids got stellar grades). Every restaurant was packed. When I pass the movie theaters, the lots are full. So is the mall. It’s incredible. I can’t help but feel jaded: with so many out of work, with so many demanding ‘change’ in the last election...what the heck is it that they’re spending their money on? Bread and circuses. We’re a nation of idiots.
Restaurants in my little town are closing down left and right. The best BBQ joint in this area closed on Sunday. He's the latest in a line of several that have closed for good in the past 6 months. This guy was normally a packed house, too. Three factories in my town have closed in the past year and several more over in Chattanooga (the closest "big" city to me). I would imagine that there are a lot of folks you see patronizing those institutions who are putting it on their credit cards. It's the American way, at least nowadays it's the American way.....ignore reality, chaaaarge it!
I used to live in North Texas too and that’s my opinion of that area as well...it’s all keep up with the Jones’s. I moved to Williamsburg VA and am glad I did. I love my neighborhood and it’s definitely not keep up with the Jones’s.
300,000 idiots or guinea pigs, if you want to be charitable. NEVER EVER buy the first generation of any new Apple release unless you like to throw around cash.
This applies to MS products, as well, so don’t make this a Apple vs MS war!
The iZombies are not amused.
Why is a color, do many things, iPad at $499 too expensive while a B&W, do a single thing, Kindle at $489 priced OK???
I do... thanks for the heads up...
I should have sent somebody out with flyers to the Apple store . Lots of fools with disposable income.
Apple iPad has become Apple iSuccess on the first day, but when will it become iFail?
Use the iPhone as your "model" for determining that ... :-)
Reminds me of Sheep and Cattle, Obama Zombies and other Followers.
You should see all the FReepers with iPads, already ... LOL ... (see link below for those Freepers).
I would be one, too, but I'm getting another laptop first, and then an iPad... :-)
Oh... and those FReepers don't find any "glaring shortcomings" either... that's just the "nattering nabobs of negativity" at it again... LOL ...
You won't have to wait long...
But then again they did it with the iPhone. Apple is apple to create demand for their products which is a pretty cool thing.
Yep, they did have great success with the iPhone, and still do. It's only the "nattering nabobs of negativity" that can't believe it ... LOL ...
And as far as "creating demand" -- that doesn't happen. What happens is that a company is good at figuring out "what" the demand is -- and then making the product to meet it.
That's where Apple is far beyond any other company...
That is the initial rush of fanboy purchases. Lets see how they continue to sell over the next three months.
Yep... I heard the "same line" given at the introduction of the iPhone ... LOL ...
