My Best Buy had no iPads, no line
CNet ^ | April 3, 2010 | Chris Matyszczyk

I was first in the iPad line at the Best Buy in Marin City, Calif., on Saturday.

Oh, I wasn't looking to buy one. Only people with certain imbalances buy the first iteration of Apple products. But the Best Buy is right next to my Starbucks and I really needed coffee.

When say I was first in line, may I add that this was 8:57 a.m., and I was the line. I stood outside what seemed an utterly deserted place for a minute before the doors parted very slightly and a man in a heavy coat came out.

He was clutching some pieces of paper, which looked like they might be legal documents.

I’ll second the idiocy of buying a 1st gen apple product, as one who purchased a first gen iPod and Powerbook Titanium. Neither lasted a year, and apple hasn’t garnered a cent of my hard-earned money since.

I tempted to want an iPad but it doesn’t really do anything.

I can look past the lack of flash and even accept their reasoning but I HAVE to have multitasking and the only reason I would want a tablet is so I can use a pen with it to take notes and draw. I would have snapped one of these up for college if it just had pen input. I also can’t look past the fact that is has NO USB ports or card readers. I don’t want to have to buy and swap out dongles.

I have an iPhone and it works flawlessly but these are the reasons I HATE apple. I don’t like having to hack my devices to use them properly.

Dude, the only reason you needed the coffee is because you were up at 8:57 AM on a friggin' Saturday morning! Try sleeping in for a change!

Gah! The stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me.

Posting on an iPad. First time I’ve taken the plunge for a first gen product. So far, I like it although the soft keypad is going to take some getting used to. I also think it is a tad heavy and people will probably complain about wrist torque when holding it in one hand for long periods of time.

I spent the whole day trying to replace Microsoft VistaCrap operating system with Windows 7 on the wife’s computer. Of course I have to delete the whole enchilada, can’t just upgrade install. Remembered why I have a mac. Microcrap really makes bad products for a gazillionaire sized company.

They made bad products when they were a young, small company, too, but that's never stopped them. They got you to buy Windows 7 didn't they?

You are so right - I had to buy Windows 7 because I do my taxes and have historical tax files on that machine and Vista OS refused to load Turbo. Yes, I got screwed.

Yes, I saw that the lack of USB ports and the lack of an integrated card reader in an article about them yesterday, and thought wow, they really screwed the pooch on this. So people have to pay extra for a plug-in card reader, sounds just like good old apple.

I mean if you want to port a whole bunch of music files over, or other files you want to browse, pdf’s etc how the hell are you going to do that if they’re on a memroy card? Everytime you’re going to have to haul out the bulky adapter. Extremely stupid.

Maybe by the 3rd generation iPad they’ll have these added in. That and maybe VOIP that works with a nice little bluetooth earpiece.

You were saying ...

I beg you pardon... LOL ...

I'll have you know, that I bought the first iteration of an Apple product a few years back and I still have it. It's an iPhone. I got it a few days after it went on sale, just because they were out in my area and I went to another state to get one.

No..., I didn't travel to another state for that reason, but I knew I was going to go there and so I figured I would get one there. :-)

AND..., I'll have you know that I bought one other product, "right out of the starting blocks" before the first one sold in public, because I knew it was going to be an immediate success (I just "knew it" automatically).

That was an Iomega Zip Drive ...

That was the first time I bought an electronic product, like that, "sight unseen" having never seen a review on one, because the first one had never been sold yet. I bought on pre-order the first one ever to get out to the public. And I never had one bit of trouble with it and loved it to death... :-)

I went from having tons of floppies, at that particular time (for backup stuff) to dispensing with floppies and going with a pile of Zip Disks, instead. It worked beautifully for me.

There are just certain things that you know are going to be an immediate success.

I did the same thing with a "service" too -- signing up immediately for it and using it ever since then.

That's the iTunes Music Store... an amazing thing when it first came out -- just about 7 years ago (at the end of this month, April).

And now..., the Apple iTunes Music Store is the largest music retailer in the U.S. ... amazing...

Apple passes Wal-Mart, now #1 music retailer in US

I have not been in Best Buy since Thanksgiving - when the circular ‘celebrated’ a Muslim holiday instead of Thanksgiving. I told the manager that I had been planning on buying a washing machine, but that now they would have NONE of my business.

I bought my PowerBook Titanium over eight years ago - used, sight unseen, from a FReeper, over eight years ago. My wife is still using it daily...
