What if you are planning to be a doctor right now?
Look into engineering.
We are slaves to the government. That’s what the income tax is.
But hey, even around here you’re called a “kook” if you say you want to abolish the income tax and IRS.
I wonder if there won’t be some countries that see an opportunity to get American trained doctors (which are the best in the world) in the near future and might do things that would entice them. It would be a shame for your daughter not to become a doctor if she wants to and can (and it sounds like she can). I never thought I’d say this, but the US isn’t the only place in the world.
My youngest son lived in Costa Rica and loved it. Of course he’s fluent in Spanish.
Unfortunately, that's about the time your daughter will be in residency.
And that includes those insurance companies that insure Congressman Judas Stupak and all the rest of the critters.
My son is in his first year of being a Dr. He is 30. Med school 1 yeear internship 3 years residency. He is scared. His wife is also a Dr. Same class.
I would be concerned about veterinary medicine too, since if the AR folks get their way there will be fewer and fewer pets, so the business will likely dry up. We can hope they are not successful, but they have had a good start all around the country getting laws passed inhibiting breeding (and I don’t mean puppy mills, I mean individuals).

My daughter is in her second year of working on her PharmD. Her goal is to be a clinical pharmacist possibly specializing in diabetes. Pays as well as a Family Practice physician in our area. She considered med school, but felt that she wasn’t cut out for patient interaction (translation: doesn’t want to touch strangers, lol). Demand is still high for pharmacists. I’m not sure how clinical pharmacists will be affected by Obamacare.
To help control costs doctors will be brought in on a massive scale from such places as Bangladesh, Haiti etc. Congress and the higher levels of the Executive branch will obtain quality American doctors. The rest of us will have to ask the doctors we get to stop shaking the rattles while they speak a language we can’t understand.
The future is always uncertain.

My doc told me last week that everyone that voted for Obama deserves Obamacare. He is anticipating retirement.
If true that could represent a huge,*huge* warning sign for your daughter to become a software engineer rather than a physician.It could also mean that if she did go into medicine she wouldn't have any trouble getting a job.The only questions would be..."what will I make....what kind of work load will I have....will I be allowed to actually *help* my patients....what will it be like having the likes of Hussein The Blessed looking over my shoulder every minute I'm seeing patients?"
If your daughter's curious just about every public library subscribes to the NEJM so she can check the accuracy of my statement about the poll.
She reads FR, so she’s seen your comment and told me you are 100% correct - she knew about it last week.
Have you read anything in this bill about forcing medical students into certain specialties? What she thinks she wants right now is to be in anesthology, but has an interest in cardiology. I think her worst fear is to get to med school, get through and then be told, there is a shortage of ER docs, so that’s what you are going to be or a shortage of Primary care docs, whatever.
Her attitude is that if she gives up her 20’s, takes on the debt necessary to be a doctor, she at least wants have say in her speciality.
She knows about how the residencies are assigned, but she plans on putting together a resume/CV/package that will give her some pull. Considering what she has done to date, I don’t think she will fail to present herself very well.

She is currently taking Calc based Physics, which is for engineers and hard science majors - she’s not impressed with the brains on the engineering side of the room
OK....recently I saw a video clip of Hussein from about 5 years ago in which he said that his ultimate dream for this country is for us to have a health system that's just like Canada's.He said that it would be a long,difficult,multi-stage process but it should be "doable". My understanding is that Canada's health care system is a disaster area.Patients wait for *months* to see specialists...have operations...get MRIs,CT Scans,etc...get "advanced" treatments.Also,I think I recall having once talked to a Canadian medical/dental student who said that a physician's/dentist's life is highly "regimented" in Canada.Your daughter might be wise to research that point because,if true,it could someday seriously affect her here regarding her career freedom...something about which she's expressed concern...and reasonably so,IMO.I suppose I could go on expressing opinions/thoughts but I don't want to bore you. ;-)
One thing worth noting well,IMO,is this...that 40% figure from the recent NEJM survey could be even more significant than it first appears.Why? Because while this particular study only applies to "primary care" docs I think it's *quite* reasonable to assume that substantial percentages of docs in *every* specialty/sub specialty would have similar thoughts.So it could *very* well come to pass that US physicians,in general,will,en masse, "vote with their feet" on the subject of HusseinCare.And while your daughter's attitude may be different than mine (she may be far braver than me) when *I* see a large crowd running away from something I usually make it a policy not to run (or walk) *toward* what they're running *away* from.If ya catch my drift! ;-)
So part of her decision making process might involve her asking herself "knowing what I know about government bureaucrats/functionaries could I enjoy being one,and answering to many,for 40..50...60 years?"
I was just going through several older threads and happened upon this one. I had to go to my Dr yesterday and asked the nurses what they thought about this HC bill.
They hate the bill and my Dr will probably retire and close his office. We live in a mostly retired community and he is the only medical provider within 20 miles.
