Good morning, Capitolists! An item in today's Washington Post by the intrepid Paul Kane and Lori Montgomery details a possible strategy contemplated by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called a "self-executing rule," which would let the House amend the Senate health care bill without ever voting to pass it. In layman's terms, House Democrats would get the benefit of doing something without having to bear the pain of doing it.
Why didn't we think of that?? If you can't find us later today, we're probably out filing a patent request for a self-executing four-mile jog and a self-executing six-week diet.
Until then, here's what's making news in Washington today:
- Sausage Making 201. The squeamish among you should avert your eyes, but the rest should read on to learn more about the self-executing rule, which the speaker said yesterday is an attractive option for House Democrats who still have serious reservations about the Senate bill. "It's more insider and process-oriented than most people want to know," Pelosi said. "But I like it because people don't have to vote on the Senate bill." If, and that's a big if, the rules committee approves a self-executing rule tomorrow, the House would still have to vote on the package of fixes to the Senate bill, and so would the Senate.
"I like it," she said, "because people don't have to vote on the Senate bill."
Pelosi on healcare bill:
- "Think of an economy where people could be an artist or a photographer or a writer without worrying about keeping their day job in order to have health insurance."
- "We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it"
Can Pelosi be removed from office for failing to uphold the Constitution?
Just how scary is this witch (with a b) that NOT ONE MAN in the congress has bigger balls than her?
Guess who opposed the Slaughter Rule in 2005?
These kinds of self-executing rules have been used by BOTH parties to avoid tough votes like raising the debt ceiling.
Mark Levin, has indicated he would challenge this legally if used.
Hell no! Doing so is an overthrow of the United States government and should be met with force!
As the HA article points out, Ralph Nader and Public Citizen filed a challenge to self-executing rules in 2005 when the Republicans used this maneuver. The case was dismissed in the DC court.
I hope Levin gets further if he takes it up.
Not legally.
total cognitive dissonance...I think that defines the left in general....
Time to lock Bayonets.
I wonder about that too. Why are the Congress-critters giving her so much power? What is she holding over them?
She’s the House Speaker, but she’s just one congresswoman among hundreds in the House.
Hmm "self-executing", it sounds like some kind of virus or spyware being installed on your hard drive without your consent. It's sleazy but sounds exactly what commie democrats would do.
Is that like thinking of an economy where people could be an artist or a photographer or a writer without worrying about producing any artwork, taking any photographs or writing anything?
