I’m going to get some decent hummingbird pics this summer. They’re no longer afraid of me and I bought a much faster lens. (faster in the wide aperture sense).

Boy do we have them in NM. FIrst the Black Chinned show up, then the Broad Tails, and finally the pyscho Rufous. Have also seen Anna’s and a Calliope.
The most I ever counted around the feeders were 30.
With a perchless feeder, I can hold out my finger and they’ll land on it to feed. Absolutely fearless little birds.

Great video - we had our first Rufous hummer at the feeder yesterday, a week sooner than last year. Southern Puget Sound area.

I once watched one hit my truck in the driveway and fall to the ground. I picked it up thinking it was dead.
It stayed in my hands for 30 minutes slowly waking up, then took off..and almost hit my truck again.

Thank you for posting this, Swampsniper! I love hummers! I collect items with hummingbirds on them. Today I got an umbrella with hummers on it that I ordered on Amazon. :~D

Thanks, Swampy! Great up close and personal on the hummers! They’re such crazy, interesting little flitters! I think the only ones we have here are the ruby throated. Love to watch them.

How beautiful. I didn’t know they would compete for the flowers either.

Thank you swampsniper for sharing. Most amazing photography. The last time I saw live humingbirds was in St. Maarten, 25 years ago during breakfast.
Please share more.

I'm eagerly anticipating the return of the ruby-throated! I've had them fly a few feet from my face, and take a good look at me. This year, I am growing red zinnias and scarlet runner beans just for the hummers.

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this!! I am fortunate to live near the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, where there is a
collection of hummingbirds (many many years old) done by a taxidermist about 1850, which has always fascinated me for the iridescence of the feathers which still remains after 150 years.
And I'm very fortunate to have hummingbirds who visit my property in the summertime and charm me with their flight.
But this documentary shows things I could never see otherwise -- thank you again!!

Beautiful. I am sending this to Mr G who got a number of photos of a hummingbird nest last year. It was fascinating to watch them.

Nashville local TV had a special on these birds and their migration back north from Central America. I plan to have a spot for them in a week or so.
