How beautiful. I didn’t know they would compete for the flowers either.

Thank you swampsniper for sharing. Most amazing photography. The last time I saw live humingbirds was in St. Maarten, 25 years ago during breakfast.
Please share more.

Many thanks for the links, guys!
Here is an old page I came across a few years back.
Very low tech, but with great photos and nice commentary.
One of my humming bird feeders is attached to my kitchen window.
You could almost reach out and touch them!
Won't be putting my feeders out until April 15, though.

Magic!!!
And yes Ann, they do eat insects. A lot of them!

I'm eagerly anticipating the return of the ruby-throated! I've had them fly a few feet from my face, and take a good look at me. This year, I am growing red zinnias and scarlet runner beans just for the hummers.

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this!! I am fortunate to live near the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, where there is a
collection of hummingbirds (many many years old) done by a taxidermist about 1850, which has always fascinated me for the iridescence of the feathers which still remains after 150 years.
And I'm very fortunate to have hummingbirds who visit my property in the summertime and charm me with their flight.
But this documentary shows things I could never see otherwise -- thank you again!!

They are neat creatures.
Does that make your hubby and I “Hummer Whisperers”?

Panasonic has discontinued most of the best cameras they ever made. I still have a like new FZ30 I’m hanging on to.

We have actually had our ruby throated come to our patio window when they come back up here, and tap on our window to let us know they want their feeders filled, if you please, on the double!
It is always a male who comes, though, not a female

They keep dropping features, no hot shoe and no fixed lens. Unless you put an adapter tube and a filter on them they suck up dust and grit like a vacuum cleaner. Every time that lens barrel goes out dirty air goes in.
The FZ30 and FZ50 with the non telescoping lenses are much better field cameras.

My “Beercan” 70-210 Minolta is f4 through the entire zoom range and tack sharp. It’s 315mm equivalent on my Sony, it’s going to be great on hummers.

Beautiful. I am sending this to Mr G who got a number of photos of a hummingbird nest last year. It was fascinating to watch them.

Nashville local TV had a special on these birds and their migration back north from Central America. I plan to have a spot for them in a week or so.
