Sailors complain of abuse from their commander, captain relieved of her command

WASHINGTON (Associated Press) -- A Navy captain was demoted because she berated and assaulted her crew, not because she led her guided missile cruiser on a drag-race with another U.S. warship in the Pacific, an investigation shows.

Capt. Holly Graf was relieved of her command of the cruiser USS Cowpens after an investigation substantiated crew allegations that she was abusive and used her position for personal gain, naval officials said Thursday on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record.

You don’t have a clue how things work in the Navy. Her career is over. She doesn’t loose rank, just the job. Now she’s warehoused doing some BS do nothing job until she retires with O6 retirement pay as long as she breaths.

She threw a wad of paper at a sailor and asked... ASKED... a junior officer to play piano at a party.

This isn’t Bligh behavior here.

I’ve worked for worse - and in the USAF, which isn’t fully a military organization, anyways!

I've got a dollar that says she's a lesbian. Just a hunch.

My thoughts exactly. What a bunch of wimps stationed aboard this ship that they find being pushed or having a wadded up piece of paper being thrown at them as abusive. Good thing they weren’t in the Navy 40 or 50 years ago. Then again, perhaps these sailors are the type that just can’t stand women in the Navy. There are plenty of them still around, too.

Well, no more promotions for her. The complaints seem a little frivilous, but Captains are always under a microscope.

You don’t get it. It’s called leadership. A real Captain doesn’t need to throw or push or what ever. And yes, I was a Naval Officer.

my shop teacher threw a 2 x 4 at me.

My world history teacher (junior high football coach most of the day) used to challenge the males in the classroom to see how many whacks they could stand from his ventilated paddle. Sort of a rite of passage. Imagine the uproar nowadays.

"Good thing they weren’t in the Navy 40 or 50 years ago."

I was a naval officer in a family of naval officers going back since before the last century. Officers don't put their hands on enlisted men - ever. When you're the Captain, on the bridge, you don't berate subordinates in front of their own subordinates. When you do, you're undermining your own authority.

These things don't look or read like much to an untrained observer, but to me as a retired naval officer, she reads like very bad news. I say, good riddance.
