Sudden disappearance of Deep River scientist mystifies colleagues

TORONTO - There are still no leads in the case of an eastern Ontario scientist who disappeared without a trace last month, leaving his colleagues mystified. Lachlan Cranswick hasn't been seen since Jan. 18, when he left work at the National Research Council's Canadian Neutron Beam Centre in Chalk River, northwest of Ottawa.

His nearby Deep River house was reportedly left unlocked and his car was in the garage. His wallet, keys and passport have all been accounted for......

I didn't realize that there are currently SEVEN different postings in the Toronto Craigslist, under "rants & raves" regarding the disappearance of Lachlan Cranswick:

Thank you very much; I tried the google news for Australia and came up with nothing, but I'm not familiar with the Australian MSM, so wasn't sure if maybe I missed something.

I will never forget how the U.S. press covered Natalee Holloway day after day after day for many many many months; yet this nuclear scientist born in Australia, educated in England and working for the last 7 years in Ontario, Canada, there are VERY few reports about him vanishing.

It's really inconceivable to me.

Over on Websleuths, some posters posit that perhaps there exist certain agencies who ARE seriously looking into Lachlan's disappearance, but they are covert, and NEVER report anything to the press.

I hope he is alright, and is quickly found, this is just terrible.

If you're familiar with this story of the missing Australian nuclear scientist whose been living in Canada for the past 7 years, I'm curious if you agree with the LEOs who have stopped all searches, and apparently are waiting for the Spring snow melt to locate a body?

In the USA, the disappearance of a nuclear scientist generates MUCH more news than this one did, it's quite shocking -- someone wrote a letter to the local paper, town of 4300 and one of the things mentioned is that plenty of the small town's residents have NO idea that anyone is missing.

SO peculiar.

For such a genius to disappear without a trace, and without an uproar from the public...... We truly have a breakdown of society in the West for something like this to transpire and so little publicity about it.

He has a huge website, and he was an active participant at online crystallography mailing lists, but that's all waaaaay over my head.

I'm confused that he had a POST-DOC position, but there's no mention of where he got a Ph.d, and I've never seen him used that abbreviation after his name in numerous articles he co-authored in scientific journals.

This is the story referred to do near the bottom of PAGE 10 at WS. It's absolutely revolting, I wasn't able to read much of it, just tried to locate the identity of the dating website.

Have you been able to locate any FACEBOOK page(s) maintained by LC? I'm surprised that there seems to be no online blog.

Something I haven't mentioned is that I worry that perhaps something IS known about his status; as one person noted on WS, it was chilling to read one of the postings about LS to the crystallography group, as it read like an obituary, constantly using past tense, "~WAS~" --- why hasn't anyone who knew him personally put up a webpage about his disappearance??? Isn't that remarkable? All those geeks & nerds & geniuses and not one has so much made a facebook account about his disappearance.

Do THEY know something that the public does NOT know??????

A couple posters at Lucianne.com believe that his disappearance has to do with the Iranian nuclear scientists who've vanished, but one person mentions something I'm entirley unfamiliar with:

There are many listings from Ontario, and of all things, there are plenty of hits for "Deep River Ontario" -- however, I'm unsure if anyone actually ever saw his photograph on there:

Sorry to bother you all, but if anybody ever runs across ANY of the schools, colleges, universities that Lachlan Cranswick attended and was graduated from, please alert us on this thread.

For such an obvious genius, it's very peculiar that there's no indication anywhere online where Mr. Cranswick received his Ph.d. -- he does mention a post doc position on his website, but never mentions where he received a bachelor's, a master's and/or a doctorate -- and apparently no school, college and/or university is claiming him as an illustrious alumni.

Again, sorry to bother you, but in the past, it's not been particularly difficult to learn these kind of details online about anyone so obviously hypereducated. It would also be interesting to learn why he never used "Ph.d." after his name in numerous journal articles he co-authored.
